As a website I use is down, another reminder to download exports or backups of your online accounts.

It's your data, get a copy.

I was exporting this site in February and August following a calendar schedule, so at least I haven't lost more than the last 5 months, though now I'm wishing I was doing it more frequently so it wouldn't be 5 months...

#Pinboard's back for me! (If it's not back for you yet, and you know what `/etc/hosts` is, hardcode `pinboard.in` to `64.62.134.190`)

Done the exports and will look into Linkding now. Fool me once, etc.

It's been a decent 16 year run with Pinboard. I definitely got my money's worth for the initial sign up fee, and probably got it when I was paying for archiving between around 2012 and 2021 (I stopped because it wasn't working half the time).

But it's also a good illustration of bit rot and software rot in web services -- web services need at least _some_ maintenance to keep them running. On scale of a decade it's often a migration to a new language version or framework. And that's often a different skillset (and motivation-set) than building the service initially.
