One oddity, in a good way, was automated additions to Pinboard that were made when Pinboard was not available still made it into Pinboard. When I re-ran by day's aggregation from the prior day's activities Pinboard fully populated (rather than just one bookmark) from my DevonThink RSS archive.

@jenesuispasdave ****immediately mashes #pinboard backup links***
(THANKS!)

#Pinboard's back for me! (If it's not back for you yet, and you know what `/etc/hosts` is, hardcode `pinboard.in` to `64.62.134.190`)

Done the exports and will look into Linkding now. Fool me once, etc.

It's been a decent 16 year run with Pinboard. I definitely got my money's worth for the initial sign up fee, and probably got it when I was paying for archiving between around 2012 and 2021 (I stopped because it wasn't working half the time).

But it's also a good illustration of bit rot and software rot in web services -- web services need at least _some_ maintenance to keep them running. On scale of a decade it's often a migration to a new language version or framework. And that's often a different skillset (and motivation-set) than building the service initially.

I'm really happy Pinboard.in is backup and running. I have alternates where the same links are captured for different purposes, but Pinboard has been my foundation.

Yesterday I went back to look at my last archive, which is more than 5 years old, but found i also have been capturing and storing the links in RSS in DevonThink 11 years.

I could rebuild my history in Pinboard, which includes Delicious to 2004 if needed.

I have belt and suspenders, but may want a personal layer.

#pinboard still down, starting to get nervous. The last time I requested an archive from maciej was...August? Did I actually download and verify that tar.gz at the time? 👀

@michaelharley yeah. X is the final straw for me, too, I think.

We all have to put in the effort to use our feet and walk to a better future, or humanity doesn't move.

X is for people who are fine with eating where each other shit.

I have a lifetime membership to #pinboard, so I don't have to stop paying but I'm going to stop using it.

Anybody care to invite me to your social bookmarking instance?

Dear Pinboard, I'm breaking up with you. It's me and it's you.

I'm ditching Pinboard after 15 years because I've outgrown paying for a service that feels abandoned when I can just self-host the thing myself.

@michaelharley Looks like the #pinboard domain renewal is taking its time to propagate https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48540592

That said, going self-hosted is not a bad option. Haven't used it myself but I've heard good things about #linkding - https://linkding.link/
