Here's a thing.

Ask any child what noise a train makes and they'll probably say "chugga chugga choo choo."

Funny thing is that pretty much no one alive today was around in the days when trains - powered by steam - made that sound.

The stories we're told are powerful, often even more powerful than the evidence of our senses. We think trains sound like that cos we're told they sound like that.

Stories are powerful; be careful with the stories you tell.

@davidnjoku @jonobie Oddly, I watched a video on YouTube yesterday that featured two locomotives from the early 20th century. Both had been refurbished and one had even been converted from coal to diesel. They're famous trains; one is the only operational Big Boy (4014). The best part of that video was watching them and hearing them make that noise. The video was shot earlier this month. The trains are on a cross country tour.

@davidnjoku @jonobie If you are a lover of the great old steam locomotives, put this on a big screen TV with the sound up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGvIKt7ndxE&feature=youtu.be

When I was young, I saw so much of the world because of trains. I weep at American trains, and wish we had spent budget on creating mass transit instead of enabling private jets.

I was gobsmacked when I realized that to take a train to visit my sister in Boston from my home near Dallas, it was faster and less expensive to drive and stay in 4* hotels along the way.

That’s madness.

@MissConstrue @davidnjoku @jonobie I am shattered. The only long train trip I was ever on was when I was in college and took a train from New York to Montreal. It wasn't a pleasant experience and it arrived 4 hours late, but at least it was cheap. (1/2)

Last year I took a train from Wenatchee to Seattle. The 4+ hour ride was affordable and pleasant in coach. I was excited for the trip home because I had a sleeper car for the short ride, but the train was canceled and they put us all on buses. I hate buses.

And that's the biggest problem with Amtrak: it is completely unreliable. (2/2)

When I said "Surely I can go from Dallas to Denver" because I wanted to see an exhibit at the Denver museum...3 days, via Kansas (?) and half of it was on a greyhound busses, at a cost over $1000 per person, without a berth.

I rented a towncar on friday, stopped halfway at a nice hotel for the night, made it there by Saturday afternoon, for way, way, way less than that. It's ridiculous. I didn't want to drive up the mountain. I wanted the train to drive up the mountain while I looked at the mountain.

@MissConstrue @davidnjoku @jonobie Car rentals are often the best way to get someplace, even if it's a one-way trip. In July sometime I'm going to have to get to Boise; it's cheaper for me to do a one day one way car rental (under $200) than to fly. And of course, the train is not even an option.
