Should we ban cars, or playgrounds?

“Think of the children”

@KimSJ

C'mon

There are thousands of regulations on cars (and playground equipment) to increase safety - including an age limit to drive.

This under-16 ban on certain sites may be a blunt tool, but it is limited and is necessitated by the utter failure of the industry to self-regulate.

@TCatInReality
If it stood a cat’s chance of working as presumably intended, I might support this age-regulation stuff. But the harms and the failures combine to make it as daft as my jokey playground “solution”.

@KimSJ

As always, the devil is in the details of implementation.

For me, I'm glad to finally see pushback on the dangerous techbros.

Of course, I would ban Twitter on national security groups - so perhaps I'm just hostile to the industry.

@TCatInReality
I fear that seeing this as ‘pushback’ against big tech is overly optimistic, considering that the biggest lobbyists in favour of age verification have been those very same big tech giants. They are salivating at the prospect of finally being able to link up all their data points.

@KimSJ

Sorry, but I reject the assumption here - that techbros support for age checks means this isn't a problem for them.

Every businessperson is trained to find the "opportunity" in every crisis. Simply because it's a new law, of course the techbros will try and influence its creation.

That does not mean it isn't push back, or a crisis. It means we need to keep focused to ensure we get the best legislation possible. Hence, my focus on data privacy as part of this.

@TCatInReality
No, Big Tech hasn’t just been responding to the zeitgeist, they are the ones whose PR has created that zeitgeist.

They saw an opportunity to distract from their own immoral business models, and collect more data about us all in the process. Total win/win for Big Tech.

@KimSJ

I disagree on the origins, but agree that's what they are doing now. And it's OK we don't agree fully.

@TCatInReality
Absolutely it’s OK we don’t fully agree. Your views always make me think, and often result in me modifying my views. And this subject is particularly complex.
