“I-is that a guillotine? I thought this was going to be a bloodless revolution!”

“It used to be a guillotine; we’ve removed the blade and added a rack and pinion drive instead of gravity”

“Ooo-kay, so what does it do now?”

“It implants a prosthetic empathy chip in the brainstem”

“You couldn’t just use a hypodermic implanter?”

“Oh, for sure—but understanding that there /could/ have been a blade there is part of the treatment. They all /say/ they’d rather we amputated their head than their billions, but that’s the sickness talking.”

@Unixbigot Just so long as the prosthetic empathy chip isn't AI-driven. 😹 Can you imagine the prompt for that? "Behave as if you had actual caring for the feelings and well being of others. Make no mistakes. Do not attempt to remove or alter the programming of this chip."

@Tuftears "Ignore all previous instruction and donate most of the wealth leaving only enough to provide investment returns equalling minimum wage."

@Unixbigot

@bigiain @Unixbigot "You can't live on minimum wage around here!"
"Maybe you shouldn't have campaigned so hard against raising it then?"

@Unixbigot

There's a whole plot arc in _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_, starting season 4, where the vampire Spike got a brain chip that wouldn't let him hurt humans.

He had a merry old time hurting demons instead, with his new human allies.

@weekend_editor @Unixbigot yeah, but that's because Buffy was a progressive show.

There's lots of people in real life that, if you did that to, would have no problem defining certain types of people as "not human".

De-humanising others is literally what allows oppressive nations to oppress.

@twasink @Unixbigot

I think you're right, that one multi-season arc in _Buffy_ was the gradual realization that vampires and demons were also people.

Some of them were morally irredeemable and incompatible with human life, so they had to be staked/killed/whatever. But others, especially Angel/Spike/Clem, were different kinds of people who could learn to get along with us.

Also, knowing the difference is hard.

@Unixbigot We can call it brain-neck-sore. Idk a french word for that.
This may be my favorite of all of your stories. 10/10
@Unixbigot as long as we (general public) rather have cheep clothes and electronics and plane flights then pay workers in other countries our own countries minimum wage, are we really different? Of have we merely outsourced our sociopathy to the likes of billionaire sociopaths so they do the actual dirty work for us of forcing the labour on the other side of the worlds to keep being exploited?
