Starmer is about to make it illegal not to hand over your identity to the companies which profit the most from having your identity, in order to "give kids their childhoods back."

No, this is how liberty dies: with a "think of the children."

And here's the official announcement of age verification coming to everyone in the UK who wishes to use "social media": > Social media to be banned for under-16s in landmark government move to give kids their childhood back https://www.gov.uk/government/news/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back #OnlineSafetyAct

And of course they're not banning ChatGPT.
@bodil the thing that needs huge, urgent regulation is online advertising in every form.
@cms I think you can safely generalise further: the thing that needs huge, urgent regulation is capitalism.
@bodil oh no, I'm accidentally doing politics on the Internet again FML.
I'm not arguing with that, I just think if you want to start attacking all of the bad stuff that's coming into peoples heads from the phones like this current mass hysteria, then the surveillance capitalism is what you should focus on, not what apps are given to which class of people.
If they wish to urgently do a practical thing, I would aim there, not some imaginary awful thing that happened to some kids in a Netflix drama.
@cms I vote for simply eating the trillionaires.
@bodil pet food perhaps, but so much drug contamination

@bodil @cms

I prefer to leave their corpses on the roads. Let the animals eat them.

@cms @bodil yes - we should focus on making the internet healthy and safe - and recognising that the most harmful bits are the algorithms and advertising

Instead of attempting to leave it intact but trying to keep kids out of a few bits of it.

@bodil weren't they planning on buying chatgpt licenses for every uk citizen or something bonkers
@xyhhx idk, but that definitely sounds like the kind of bright idea Peter Kyle might have had.
@bodil They aren't banning it just making it so it get's more data like ID. So not great.
@bodil @neil I am 80% suspicious this is motivated by the quixotic urge to insert whip control across parliamentary WhatsApp groups.

@bodil They're not going to stop (or be stopped) while the opposition are saying that children need unfettered access to the Internet. They can confidently hand over your digital lives to IT corps because most of you are clamoring for communion with IT corps.

Parental judgment is brushed aside, really not even mentioned. Its just assumed that parents will shower their kids with Internet-connected gadgets in addition to phones.

@bodil What's the betting govt coninues to put announcements on X so as to drive adults to give up their ID to Musk.
@annehargreaves I wouldn't bet against that…
@bodil, that's exactly how Russia made it up years ago. Labeled it "in the name of the children" and pushed it as far as possible limiting freedom because it's always not enough as new threats are coming. It's kinda upsetting to see how the world falls down into the same trap.
@bodil It still needs Parliament's approval, I think, and it's still months away.
There is still time to block this change, either in Parliament or in the courts.
