I've run my own server through the 2010s, using Ubuntu server running things like my webpage and blog (both defunct) and a variety of other services like music streaming and whatnot. I shut it down a few years ago, but now I'm getting back to it, using #FreeBSD and jails. Yeah, I know Linux and containers are what the kids are using, but I do that s**t at work. Learning to do server admin again with a slightly different set of tools is refreshing. 1/n
Doing this stuff, there's like a 1000 tiny skills I am leveling up each time. A lot of it is standard UNIX tooling stuff. For some reason, I decided to use `tmux` instead of `screen`, so I'm learning that, too. What am I gonna run on this server? Probably a basic web portal vanity page (links to my stuff), a blog (writefreely, maybe), a lightweight fediverse instance server (gotosocial, snac, ???), IRC bouncer, file sharing server, and whatever else strikes my fancy. 2/n

I have a goal to get off of corporate services (gmail, google docs, etc) that I still use out of laziness/convenience/inertia by the end of this year, it was my new year resolution. So, whatever I can run on this server to help with this transition, I will run. I've run my own mail server for email in the past and that's a BIG one to get right, so I'll probably outsource that to less evil company for the time being. Any recommendations for ungoogling myself with my own server?

You have far more base than I. Almost everything I have is Linux-based, and mostly the feeb end of the pool (#Yunohost has a great set of services oob - xmpp, email, etc.)

I am looking to gain experience with *BSD. I said this last year, too. <sigh>
