Braved the overwhelm of Chadstone shopping centre on a weekend to experience the new RONE exhibition “home” and it was so worth it. It continues the theme in his past work of recreating lost domestic worlds as though the occupants disappeared leaving everything frozen in time. This one evolves from previous exhibitions by making much less use of centrepiece portraits painted on walls and by portraying outdoor scenes. Whereas previous exhibitions have been mostly in spaces with retro vibes, this one is in a shop space requiring every detail being created from scratch. The world he and his team have created is so detailed and immersive you forget where you are, it feels hard to believe you’re 10 metres from a cosmetics store.

The exhibition runs to 12 July. Entry is free, bookings are encouraged but you might be able to get walk up entry

@joannaholman not sure I've been to Chaddy for 20 years now. Has it actually improved?
@LapTop006 it used to be my regular shopping centre when I lived in the area from about 2008-2013. It has expanded so much I recognised almost nothing and got really lost trying to find my way to the bus. Did about 3.8km walking in the centre and I think there are parts I didn’t see. Wouldn’t recommend going there to shop or dine but it’s worth it for this
@joannaholman it was already huge long before 2008
@LapTop006 It is SO much bigger. They're now up to 550 stores plus a hotel and various entertainment venues (bowling ect)
@joannaholman it had the AMF back in the 90s, and probably earlier

@joannaholman

Went Thursday and thought it was fantastic. My only previous Rone experience was the extraordinary Time, in the abandoned third-floor wing of Flinders Street Station in 2023, so was keen to see what was done in a much smaller space, and was not disappointed.

By happy coincidence was out in the "backyard" and fell to talking to a couple, only to realise it was the artist and his partner (who's clearly integral to the work too). Lowkey lovely people and very happy to chat. 😎

@joannaholman Oooh a Peugeot 404!
@frogglin They must have had fun getting that into the shopping centre during setup!
