One of the things that grinds my fuckin' gears the most about "AI" boosters is how much they chastise the rest of us for "refusing to engage".

I am not refusing to engage! When i yell at the top of my lungs about how shitty and destructive this shit is, i am engaging! This is what engaging looks like, because every new technology is first and foremost a site of struggle!

What the cultists are trying to insist we do isn't "engage", it's "concede".

@adrienne If LLMs worked, didn't destroy the environment, and were 100% accurate I think they'd have an actual product.

Unfortunately that isn't reality and they are generally awful. And once their investors realize it's snake oil they'll be sold to nothing.

@matoakit Also if they weren't made entirely by stealing and plagiarizing.
@adrienne That too. It's soul theft

@matoakit @adrienne

The false analogy with human learning is particularly insulting. (Plus the implication we should respect a fucking LLM like if it was a conscious mind. Anthropomorphization is one of their surest rhetorical weapons.)

@adrienne I definitely started fiddling with AI early enough to qualify as an early adopter, back when it mostly just created dog apparitions and surreal landscapes and then I stopped using it when I realized the ethical, economic, political, artistic and environmental issues with it, that's why I don't like it when AI-boosters try to paint me as some out-of-touch grouse that just hates all new technology. I did give it a chance! and I discovered that it sucks ass.
@adrienne and also, I’ll engage with WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT END OF

@adrienne They're sealioning.

If it worked they wouldn't be selling it, they'd be using it. If the FOMO was real they wouldn't be threatened by people who don't care. Nobody went "how dare you not own a cell phone". They didn't need to.

@adrienne Beware there are many sophisticated propagandists undermining the anti AI message.

@shwell1 @adrienne

Sorry, I took "undermining" to mean "moles", "false flag operations" and so on. Some people dislike the extreme positions some of us take and end up distrusting us.

@angelastella @adrienne No doubt that is happening too. But in the meantime you will see agents posting on various platforms and news comments sites. Look out for a barrage of stories saying if we don't have it and they do then we are dead. Ludite stories too.
@angelastella @adrienne I'm seeing some "You can't vote your way out of this" messaging too. Well... yes we can. Young people can vote to destroy it.
@angelastella @adrienne ... not that I am young :(
@adrienne I am extremely frustrated when they absolutely don't take a no for an answer. "You should hear all positions" I did! and I found the arguments against more convincing! What you are demanding is not a fair contest and let the best position win the debate, you are just throwing a tantrum demanding that the contest be repeated and perpetuated indefinitely until you win!

@elrohir @adrienne

Techbros don't believe in consent. They're right about everything after all, aren't they?

@elrohir @adrienne

So. Much. This.

Same tactic the Creationist Climate Denial fascistbigots use - "Teach the Controversy" instead of "Follow the evidence"

@adrienne
I have been coding what is now called AI since around 1983. It’s not ‘intelligent’. It never has been.

It can regurgitate what it is fed based upon algorithms. It follows its coding. It cannot ‘think’. I worked on it through the 90s in University research, when ‘neural nets’ were the NextBigThing.

Continued into language modelling, and all the other fun we had this century. I can code an LLM in Python in half a day, and I know it has no sentience.

Any half-decent coder understands this. None of us wanted to call it ‘AI’. 😉
