This band is everywhere right now, and I agree with many that they are totally overhyped at this moment.

But on a “do you like listening to them” level, well, I definitely do. So when I saw the not-exorbitantly-priced represses were available for preorder from a local record store, I was happy to do so. These will go in this weekend’s cleaning pile and listened to soon!

@kaiser_franz They are over-hyped, of course. Bless the children. But it doesn’t mean they are not bloody good. I really like them. Will they stand the test of time? Maybe not, either way I will also be buying the new vinyl :)

@revivalrecords I started to get into microtonal via King Gizzard, so I was primed to like this.

Someone - I think it was @TheVinylApe (sorry for tagging you if I’m wrong) mentioned there were others before them that I would like to look into but I can’t remember who they are and don’t have time to scroll back through hundreds of posts…. Ape, could you remind us? The Discogs wantlist is primed and ready…

@kaiser_franz @TheVinylApe Indeed! The Mercury Tree are another band I know of. A lot of Indian music is microtonal too - I got into it in a big way when my Indian colleagues made me a playlist. I guess the sitar is a microtonal instrument? Anyway, let’s Await The Ape™ as he will guide us 😂
@revivalrecords @TheVinylApe Looking up Mercury Tree now…holy shit! Adding this to the list

@revivalrecords @kaiser_franz sorry it took so long to get to this.
It’s been a busy day.

Although I’m far from an expert, I’ve listened to a lot of weird microtonal music over the years.

Almost every kind of instrument (keyboards, stringed instruments, electronic, and wind instruments) have a type that can play intervals smaller than the standard 12-tone.

In the early 2000s, I made a record while living in NYC that was rife with an Archicembalo, which is a keyboard that has 36 keys per octave.
And for a brief time, I also owned a fretless guitar, which I didn’t have long because I hated it.

Violins, violas, and cellos are also perfect for making microtonal music.

The most FUN one for me personally is the theremin, which I still own and is in my storage unit. Full pitch control, and perfect for implementing into that kind of music OR for drunkenly covering the original theme of Star Trek.
