Now isn't that fascinating? A bicycle bell operating on a narrow sound frequency so it can be heard despite noise cancelling headphones! That's clever.
I didn't know that Škoda originated as a bicycle company, that's interesting in itself.

The bicycle bell that noise-cancelling headphones can’t ignore

Engineers have developed a bicycle bell that can be heard by pedestrians wearing noise-cancelling headphones, potentially reducing collisions on busy streets.

There's a lot of car companies that began as bicycle makers (and a lot of car dealers that began as bike shops)
Aston Martin , Peugeot,
Rover , Riley,
Triumph , Sunbeam
Opel, Suzuki
Plus many others

Oh my goodness, that's amazing. I know that some airplane manufacturers also made cars, but I had no idea of ties to bicycle making. You learn something new every day!

@Giselle Annoyingly, it's not something we can buy, and probably never will be able to. They're ran a “influencer-led awareness campaign”, for whatever that's worth!

I guess the thing could be rather expensive and wouldn't be practical, but still!

@johnpettigrew
From what I gather this isn't a bell that's being made at the moment. But you're right, it'll be awfully expensive. Highly likely. Still a pretty good invention, for what's it's worth...
@Giselle designing to fix the wrong problem. The problem is cyclists and pedestrians gerrymandered together in the same space cos we've given the rest to cars. Get rid of the cars, and we reduce the amount of bike/pedestrian interaction and then no need to have a fancy bell.
@quixoticgeek @Giselle
Totally agree!! I really avoid cycling in spaces that are shared by pedestrians, because the majority are listening to something while they walk. And why shouldn't they be? Still, I want to give them fair warning when approaching from behind. I'm delighted that #YEG has developed so many#bikelanes in central neighbourhoods. They allow me, and other #ActiveTranspo folks to move around pretty safely.

@EllenInEdmonton @quixoticgeek @Giselle I went hunting for a video to hear this bell, and here's one: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Hwn3gJ9xw1M
Interesting that it sounds pretty conventional. I was expecting something klaxonishly obnoxious.
