One of the charities we give to each year is Puppies Behind Bars, a program that selects inmates (many of them serving lengthy/life sentences) to train service dogs. They send us a black and white booklet as a thanks that includes photos of prisoners in the program with their dog trainees, and a number of letters from inmates saying how much the program changed their lives, gave them purpose, and helped them give back to society. AFAICT, the participating prisons are all in New York. Not sure if the program exists in other states, but it probably should.

@briankrebs Cute, nice initiative. Although the US prison system is so effed up seen from the old continent. That third picture with the wall/door made of literal bars 🤯🤯🤯

They got a fabulous program doing just this.

@briankrebs It's definitely a thing in other states; my parents' last dog was part of a Dog Behind Bars thing in Kentucky or something way before they adopted her

@briankrebs Guide Dogs of America / Tender Loving Canines based in California does the same thing. They train #guideDogs autism #serviceDogs and PTSD service dogs for veterans.

They need more puppy raisers. Mostly in LA and San Diego.
