Ok so, having a @protonprivacy plan running until April 2027 gives me the time to test and evaluate other options.

I'm giving @thunderbird desktop app a go, and I've seen they have an iOS app in the making (by the end of the year).

I actually secretly hope that, by then, I'll have freed myself from Apple services, but who knows. I'm not a fan of Google–Android tbh. Alternatives?

Sometimes I think I'd rather live in a cave.

@simona I am often tempted to get one of these (doesn’t really help with your question): https://www.thelightphone.com/
The Light Phone

Light is a radically different technology company. We design beautiful tools that respect and empower our users and our first product is The Light Phone.

@scott yesss I've seen them, the design is so neat! However I find the 3 a bit pricey, and the 2 is not available for international shipping (I'm based in France). Should I go with a $50 dumbphone? 😅 but then banking app, sport app, electronic invoicing... we're trapped.

@simona yes totally — by design, you can’t do any of the normal smart phone things on the light phone. :)

Meanwhile android and iOS have almost all of the market so they are hard to avoid.

I have seen people on fedi mention @GrapheneOS and @elementary OS? I get the sense there are some alternative platforms emerging but have not looked into it much. (I am on iOS for now, just refusing to upgrade to liquid glass 😅)

@scott @simona Oh wow. I was looking for something like this for a teenager whom I don't want to give a traditional smartphone but some basic connectivity. Unfortunately, the Light Phone II is flagged as incompatible with German phone operators, and the Light Phone III is too bulky and expensive (he still tends to loose things, so I don't want him to walk around with a 700 $ device). Do you know anything else that is comparable to the Light Phone II and works in Germany?

@tobifant @simona I don’t personally — but maybe a super simple non-smartphone? (Do they even make those anymore?)

My kids have Gizmo smart watches, which can text and make calls in a really limited way. (I’m in the US, though.)
