🚨 Say that I were to give a talk to EU policy makers and OSS communities at a very big conference tomorrow..

and that I want to spend half of my talk on how Google is locking down #Android through:
1. Device attestation
2. Developer registration
3. Age/identity verification

What should I absolutely include? šŸ‘€

Input is welcome, sorry for the short notice. Plain language + realistic calls to action pls.

@fdroidorg @GrapheneOS @postmarketOS @Fairphone @appfair @fsfe @murena @volla @IzzyOnDroid

@Gina maybe something about a freedom ladder? here's a slide u can prob put:

# alt mobile exp

there is a "freedom ladder" depending on ur risk tolerance, listed from most to least restrictive

- Apple/Android
- GrapheneOS & Fairphone: reuse Android internals but offer privacy/ethical distribution
- Volla/Jolla: alternative os's (tbh dont know too much about this)
- Ubuntu Touch: combines android internals with linux userspace
- pmOS/mobian/pocket blue/danctnix/etc: variable but growing support

@Gina there's others that i couldn't fit in b/c of the 500 char limit

eg. pine64, sailfishos, etc.

would highly reccomend skimming @linmob 's blogs/mastodon for a thorough list. he follows the linux mobile space closely

@Gina @Logical_Error

I… would not call Fairphone ethical by any stretch of the imagination. To put it very mildly. Volla seems to be part of the same group that wants to push UnifiedAttestation and thus are trying to be the people who get to tell you that you can't run your bank's app on your phone because you dared change a setting that they seem inconvenient. As for Jolla, they were working directly with the Russian government until the Finnish government literally banned them from doing so anymore so they're not a great company to trust either.
