One of the killer features from @HolosSocial is for me, that you can use your own domain.

This means, as a band, author etc you can promote everywhere your handle with @name@my_own_domain.tld

This is so perfect. This means your handle will still be correct if the instance you chose in the beginning is not alive anymore.

I would love to see this feature in #Mastodon, #Pixelfed #loops #peertube and the #bridge

@joergi @HolosSocial @Mastodon @dansup In fact something like this is possible already with mastodon:

https://www.heise.de/ratgeber/Eigene-Domain-auf-Mastodon-benutzen-7372670.html
(sorry only in german)

In short: Just put a file `.well-known/webfinger` in the DocumentRoot of YOURDOMAIN with the content of `https://MASTODONSERVER/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:USERNAME@MASTODONSERVER`.
Then you can promote everyone your handle with `@USERNAME@YOURDOMAIN`.

Example: @ [email protected]

Eigene Domain auf Mastodon benutzen

Ich habe eine eigene Domain und möchte beim Microblogging-Dienst Mastodon unter <mein-name>@<meine-domain> zu finden sein. Geht das irgendwie?

Nice. I'll read through it. It seems it involves manual worl by the Admins. i want this feature to be enabled by everyone. With Holos, you can do it right from the settings.
But like I said, I'll read through it. Thx

@errror
That trick is nice, but it only changes how your handle looks. Your account and your keys still live on the Mastodon server. If that server goes away, the handle points to nothing.

On Holos the keys stay on your device, and the domain is yours. So you are not tied to one relay. If a relay goes down you just point to another one and lose nothing. It is not even a migration.

The name is the easy part. Keeping it is the harder one.
