#Linux people need to understand: nobody moves to Linux because they want, but because they need to.

That “need” is a breaking #Windows update, or a slow computer, 99% of the time.

The sooner they come up with a migration app for Windows, the better. Otherwise we’ll keep seeing <5% Linux users forever.

@darkghosthunter > Nobody moves to linux because they want

I did. And i'm sure many other people did.

@darkghosthunter I also dont't think making a migration app is possible. nor do i think installing a distro is hard. Just flash the ISO on the USB, boot in live mode and click whatever button says "Install"

@MuhammadFreeSoftware 1. You are the minority.
2. USB Boot is black magic for the 95% rest of the market.

Linux should be welcoming from the instance it becomes an alternative, not a gated pro-only environment. Plus, not everyone can upgrade still to Windows 11 when their machine is still working with Windows 10.

@darkghosthunter

I wouldn't say that nobody moves because they want to. I did. But it's rare, sure.

We used to have a simple way to do it. Ubuntu used to have a way to install it along side Windows and you could run it on bare metal. But that's long past at this point.

@darkghosthunter I think in any user base larger than say 2 people, you are going to see a lot of motivations

And of course with a few million users (to a billion, Android lumped in) you are going to see a lot more

At this point maybe every possible reason

@darkghosthunter and fwiw, I think the worst possible thing we can do is imagine some hypothetical user who "should" be on Linux, and then demand the ecosystem serve that fever dream

Personally, I think it's great that there are distros and spins for so many of us

@buckfiftyseven Some people _should_ be on Linux, some don't. Just imagine people on Windows 10 or 8 having to live with eventual CVE for a computer that connects to the Internet that are popping out every day thanks to AI, and those that are not disclosed yet.

@darkghosthunter Mint is generally considered best for people who want to make the minimum effort to move, and that's fine

It doesn't mean Cachy should be directed at the same audience

Or that anyone is really going to satisfy any old Windows who don't want to put in any effort at all

@buckfiftyseven Yeah. Since it's another ecosystem, the problem is mostly how to replace your usual software with an alternative.

Same happens in macOS, but it's less abrasive given there is always a port of something.
