Contemplation

#NotAI

@benroyce I think someone is exited that he managed to get trough the whole Ukraine and further faster than the worlds "second best" army.
@benroyce Majestic creature!
@benroyce not AI ... so ur saying someone is just taking modelling pictures of their pet snail?

@Tesseks

unfortunately the world we now live in, the problem of #AI generated photo and video might be at one level, but the far worse level problem is that people now doubt *everything*, even the real

i think this knock-on effect is more insidious than the fake shit

@benroyce that's very true.

@Tesseks

as for the snail, that's a Pacific sideband

they range from Alaska to California and are quite common, abundant in some spots

although i love the idea of someone taking their pet snail out for a contemplative walk, and getting prestige shots ☺️

@benroyce i figured it must have been a snail native to the US.

Does look very contemplative making me think it was it's first time overlooking the sea lol.

@Tesseks

the photo isn't fake-fake

but i would be surprised if the photographer didn't "help" the snail into a more epic location (and then wait for the perfect pose)

or who knows. maybe if we had a zoom out we would see snails absolutely everywhere, and this pose was 100% natural and easy

@benroyce omg now I like to imagine the camera person just stumbled upon a colony of travelling snails who just finished a long journey to the seaside.

@Tesseks

😂

"hey creep, you're ruining the vibe with that camera"

@benroyce @Tesseks At least photoshop required some human skill and effort.

@su_liam @Tesseks

photoshop?

shit, what about airbrush and scalpel

i wonder if that meant your life was safe, because your skills were so extraordinary, or if it meant your life was less safe, because you knew

@benroyce @Tesseks ngl I appreciate the tag because that was exactly my first thought

@nightoo @Tesseks

i reverse searched the image, it's original

i did a dive into the poster's socials

they are a moth enthusiast primarily

genuine in all other respects: chatting normally, posting normally, no off, bot-like engagement patterns

unless OP posts their travel receipts that day, we'll never know 100%

but it's a fucking common snail species, the Pacific Sideband, overlooking a Pacific Northwest view

verdict:

this shit is real

@nightoo @Tesseks

follow up:

there was a guess in the replies that this is Cape Perpetua, Oregon

search on that, it fits

specifically, what's known as the Whispering Spruce View

i'm confident that is where the photo was taken

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Perpetua

here's another photo, could even be the same rock:

@benroyce @Tesseks Yeah, I posted something about that recently, where my work has us running nature documentaries for atmosphere and two little kids came in automatically disbelieving the Australian animals as "SO Totally AI"!

@Ashmire @benroyce @Tesseks
JFC, I wish many of the Australian animals were just AI. Especially some of the bugs and spiders.

(No shade to spiders, some are cool.)

@Ashmire @Tesseks

this is a form of #AI #brainrot that doesn't get as much press:

we all have biases

some take that so far they would rather reject evidence than reject their biases

we're drowning in the world in such people (the kids in your example are excused, but not adults)

by what method will someone reject evidence?

the old ways

but now: "So Totally AI!"

the new rallying cry of the pridefully ignorant

AI fakes are a problem, yes

but secondarily: doubting everything

far worse

@benroyce @Ashmire @Tesseks
I mean, I question everything including myself. Often I find the issue comes when you get too lazy to verify what the actual answer is. But it is nice when people let me know when I'm liking a non-AI photo - or when they let me know (nicely) that I just reacted to AI or a random bot online.

@Cassandra_Complex @Ashmire @Tesseks

it's going to become more difficult to tell AI from the real

😔

@benroyce @Ashmire @Tesseks
My personal goal is to make AI data centers so untenable that I don't have to worry about that.

Pop, you bastard of a bubble, pop!

@benroyce @Ashmire @Tesseks links with Bannon's "flood the zone with shit" and Arendt's "The point of modern propaganda... is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth."
@benroyce This snail is on a mission.. to steal the moon!!
@benroyce steady on, fellow traveller.
@benroyce I wish someone could show me what that little guy perceives. Do they have any sense of wonder at such a magnificent vista? Or is their world only a few inches from their heads. Makes me think of our own limited perception. We only know a tiny fraction of what is outside of our heads. Like a camera; light projected on the cave wall. Seems to me we are rarely aware of what is only a few feet from our heads. What vistas am I missing? If not visual, then in awareness?
@benroyce Bookmarking to show to my oldest daughter who loves photographing small creatures.
@benroyce Oh the places we will go.
@benroyce "it took me *four hours* to climb up here and now it's *cloudy*"

@ferrix

considering snail eyesight is poor, and snail taste is excellent, and higher humidity can preserve and project some smells longer and stronger, the snail may prefer clouds

which makes the picture kind of cooler, if the snail is going "woah! it's a like a distant giant symphony of all sorts of smells!"

@benroyce he's on a quest to touch that immortal guy

@benroyce

Don't do it! Don't jump!

Nous sommes leurs amis. Le problème, ce sont ceux qui ne le sont pas.

@benroyce hmm idk... can't spell "snail" without "AI"... something's off... 🤔
@benroyce I guess snails are the last incarnation before one can leave the cycle of rebirths.
