the dutch sure love their water thingies! i'm not sure what this is called in english (it's called a lock! thanks petra and kelly!), but I think it's to let smol vessels traverse differences in water level. so the boat parks in the middle part, which will change the water to the target's level, and then the boat can continue boating there

WHAT IN THE HECK IS THIS! apparently this is what some think modern architecture should look like in appingedam. so this village has got the loveliest place in the netherlands, but it's also trying for the ugliest 😬

HERE IT IS! this is what I came here for! it's quite a big village, but somehow I found this spot immediately (I had no idea how to get there, I was just biking at random).

bit bummed out it wasn't as sunny anymore, but still a lovely photo imho!

@jiub here's the fluffiest cat of appingedam. also it totally ignored me as I took photos from up close. I think this is the gang leader and it gives zero fucks about anyone.

@jiub so then my plan was to travel back home by train, but I JUST missed the train, so I figured I could bike one village further, the somewhat less idyllic village of #delfzijl

I ALMOST missed the third train back because of this but that was worth it

there are quite a lot of long distance bike trails here (like 100km or even longer) that are usually built on disused railways, but unless you happen to live right on the trail you have to either ride on the road with car traffic or drive to get there

@bazkie with a seeming lack of hills in Dutchieland, what is the maximum render distance of your eyes, at any given time?

@jwtownshend well they made it always be a bit foggy, else the framerate would drop too much

@jwtownshend forreal tho, checking maps, those windmills are about 6-8 kms away from where I was, and they were very clearly visible to the eye :)

@bazkie interesting! there’s a 400m hill walking distance from my house, on the very clearest days you can just about see an old coal power plant about 50km away… if you’re ever in the uk and fancy exploring the Peak District for a few days you’re welcome to use my spare room as a base

Like, yay i’m away from my pets, plushies, home comforts, familiarity, safe foods, etc. now in an unknown place where i feel lost, scared, can’t communicate (even worse than usual), and it’s expensive and the weather is too hot, and I am tired and just want to be with my cat… but yay holidays! Or something…

home is safe and warm! (if maybe a bit boring sometimes)
