went on a bicycle trip again. goal: #appingedam, a cute town in the northeast of the province of #groningen.

I remember there being a beautiful river going right through the village. tourists always wanna go to giethoorn, but that shit is boring af and it's got nothing on appingedam.

off we go!

the dutch sure love their water thingies! i'm not sure what this is called in english (it's called a lock! thanks petra and kelly!), but I think it's to let smol vessels traverse differences in water level. so the boat parks in the middle part, which will change the water to the target's level, and then the boat can continue boating there

WHAT IN THE HECK IS THIS! apparently this is what some think modern architecture should look like in appingedam. so this village has got the loveliest place in the netherlands, but it's also trying for the ugliest 😬

HERE IT IS! this is what I came here for! it's quite a big village, but somehow I found this spot immediately (I had no idea how to get there, I was just biking at random).

bit bummed out it wasn't as sunny anymore, but still a lovely photo imho!

@jiub so then my plan was to travel back home by train, but I JUST missed the train, so I figured I could bike one village further, the somewhat less idyllic village of #delfzijl

@jiub so I was taking too much photos again and so I missed the next train too. so I decided to bike even further

but then I reached the end of the map ✋

people, the north sea! (or well, officially the waddenzee at this point)

I ALMOST missed the third train back because of this but that was worth it

@jiub yeah I'm really blessed living here! I mean it's normal for me but I understand it's one of the only places on earth with this quality of bicycle infra!

@bazkie it must be so nice!

there are quite a lot of long distance bike trails here (like 100km or even longer) that are usually built on disused railways, but unless you happen to live right on the trail you have to either ride on the road with car traffic or drive to get there

@bazkie that looks an idylic journey. Even with the Ugly Building competition. That canal with lily pads has me totally spell-bound. I need to sit on that dock and doodle, make music, nap, and be a cat.

we hebben allemaal onze eigen baseline fitheid en daar is niets mis mee he, ik sport ook al jaren 2 a 3x per week.. dus vooral niet gedemotiveerd raken van mij 😅
