"National charities Mencap, Mind, and the National Autistic Society have reacted with alarm to today’s Supreme Court ruling that removes the framework known as #CheshireWest. They warn that it strips fundamental human rights protections from potentially hundreds of thousands of severely disabled people. ...

"The Court implies that individuals with profound cognitive disabilities cannot be "deprived" of liberty because their condition limits their ability to _experience_ it—a view that devalues their fundamental rights."

! ! !

"If a vulnerable person appears passive or does not actively protest their arrangements, the law may recognise this as "consent" — even if they are subjected to routine physical restraint or chemical sedation or have never known a life without a high level of restriction."

Jesus Christ. The UK has been on a spree for the last 15 years to dehumanize the poor and vulnerable. Always amazed that it's safer to be poor in the States than England.

The Labor government is not beating the accusations

@burnoutqueen You mean they're not protesting or coming up with protections? Wasn't expecting them to. They've shown who they are. @unchartedworlds

@unchartedworlds
If I am suddenly severely stressed, through assault or injury, or other unexpected incident, I rapidly withdraw and become mute, and often non expressive, or responsive.

Unless someone gives me a pen and paper, or a device to type on, the assumption could easily be that I have no cognition of my surroundings, interactions, or the preceding and current events.

This is why I am rarely away from Sue, who will advocate for me, as will some of the staff at work. (reminds me that I must tell my new manager).

@Maker_of_Things I'm sorry to hear that, and you're not alone. I think it's unrecognized how commonly many of us freeze in reaction to trauma.

@unchartedworlds based on the lnked article and without the judgement to read, this sound appauling. Perhaps people need to sign a power of attorney to mitigate this decision.
