I've been doing some more dot painting lately, and I promised I'd share some of the results, so here we go… mini-thread!

The first one (green + purple) is a stone I made for a friend, I call them "Soothing Stones" because I amplify the dots with thick glaze, making a really pleasing bumpy surface. They feel really good to hold in your hand and run your fingers over.

The other is a "dragon egg" design. I did an earlier one in reds, and wanted to try again with blues. :)

Two more… The purple/pink/turquoise one is a re-do of a previous design I painted. I think the original works better… the fuchsia background didn't pop as much as a black background would have, I think.

The other was just because I wanted to play around with metallic copper, so I did a design based around that and red tones. I thought it came out well! Might have ended up a little too busy, though…

A bunch of "Soothing Stones". The first was a gift for a friend who was really into Taylor Swift, so the colours were meant to match her latest album, "The Life of a Showgirl".

I like making these; they usually go really quickly to friends, but I'm trying to build up a bunch of them so I can donate them to a good cause. I'll explain more about that later, once I have enough. ^^

And finally, one I finished varnishing up last night, another re-do of a previous triquetra or "Trinity Knot" design I painted a while back. The previous one was painted in warm red, gold, and copper tones, so I wanted to try again with cooler tones this time. :)

Plus a couple really small ones that will become magnets. A rainbow for #Pride!

@Rheall these are so cool! I didn't understand about using glaze to thicken the dots, is that like glaze mixed with the paint? eta and what kind of paint

@ProcessParsnip ah! You can just use small drops of gloss varnish; build them up over enough layers, letting them cure in between, and they make a nice, smooth, raised bump. :) I also have a type of glaze that's "extra thick" so I only need one drop to make a nice-sized bump. Specifically this stuff: https://www.decoart.com/products/triple-thick-gloss-glaze

(You can also build up layers of acrylic paint to make the raised bumps, but acrylic paint isn't as hard as the gloss, so the bumps are easily marred.)

@ProcessParsnip I don't know if I was clear enough... The varnishing/glazing comes after the painting, I don't mix any glaze with the paint. The paint I use is DecoArt Americana brand, it's the perfect consistency right out of the bottle. You want the paint to be the consistency of egg yolk, if it's too thick the dots won't be smooth. :)

I'm especially fascinated by the copper one. It looks like an alien artefact of a long disappeared civilization.

@yncke Eee, thank you! They do take some patience, but the actual mark-making is pretty simple… I honestly believe anyone can learn how to do it. :) I'm intrigued by your interpretation of that red/copper one! I wonder what it would have been used for…
