Can someone recommend trekking poles that fold up quite small? I have Leki trekking poles which I absolutely love but they will be too long to take on the plane with me to Norway and I will absolutely need trekking poles in the mountains. TIA xx

@Chrissy Some are very compact, but people don't always love the way the maker uses to lock them in position, or the handle style. If you can, I recommend popping into your local REI if you have one and checking them out in person. They have people come in with similar requirements often.

@Chrissy I have the Fizan Compact 4 poles. They are telescopic and are around 50 cm when in their shortest configuration. Not the cheapest, but they're so easy to bring along, I think they're worth the price.

I love my poles, which I believe are also Leki. I got them 9 years ago, and they're still going strong. Probably not as compact as you need. I would pay the additional amount for a checked bag, rather than getting new and untested poles, but that's me.
@EllenInEdmonton I would too, but the trekking poles don't fit inside my bag and leaving them on the outside is too risky as they'll likely get lost.

Last week, I was delighted to talk my friend into buying an ultralight pack that would be ideal for day treks in the mountains. It would easily hold 3 litres of fluids and a warm layer. There were side pockets for poles, and multiple pockets on the front for whatever you need to carry. Not big enough for multi-day hikes, though. I wish such packs existed back when I was trekking for hours and hours in remote locations. I made do with whatever existed, and I tied items to my pack.
@Chrissy Are your current poles the telescopic type or the folding one? If not the latter and if a maximum length of 120 cm is enough for you, the 'Leki Skytera FX Carbon SL Compact' fold down to a length of 39 cm.

@Chrissy Negotiate with the carrier. There are ways.

@Chrissy we like our Harriers which we had a friend in the UK buy and we picked them up from her before our Cotwold hike. They easily fold up into our carry on so were able to take them home on the plane.

@Chrissy These are expensive but very light and fold in thirds. They also break, I’m on my third or fourth pair but I like them.
@Chrissy I have these:

They are expensive, but very good! Light, but durable. Mine are already 6 yrs old, but still going strong.
Tip: I've wrapped a piece of duct tape around them. If something breaks, so I've means to fix it.

@Chrissy have you looked at the foldable poles from Leki? You have to buy them in the correct length though.

Also you can look at some of the trail running poles which also fold up, but have a short adjustable section.

@ysb33r I think I may have to do that although I'm not to keen on buying another pair of trekking poles. But it might be my only option.
