Hey #DMV friends - did you hear that the Capital Weather Gang is leaving the Washington Post and going independent?

Check out their new site: https://www.capitalweather.com

(Non DMV folks: the CWG is a beloved institution here in DC. They are funny, self deprecating, and extremely nerdy!)

@jkirkendall Oh, wow! that's big news.
@jkirkendall Amazingly good news! Just signed up and put the app on my devices. Opted to be a friend at $8 a month. They are sooooworth it.
@jqheywood Yay! I'm doing the same!
@jkirkendall Now we just need them to join us here on the fediverse.
@dcpatton Yes, that would be great. In one of the Great Exoduses from Twitter, Ian Livingston joined up, but like many he left for Bluesky.
@jkirkendall Full circle. Started by EPA meteorologist Jason Samenow in the early 2000s and bought by WaPo around 2008 in a very smart move. Weather is kind of the ultimate constant breaking news story and old WaPo management understood that.
@brianvastag Oh! I had no idea Jason Samenow was the founder! I'm really happy for them. I know the last round of lay offs was very hard on them.
@jkirkendall I'm not even in the DMV area, and I just sent a contribution because I like to support efforts like this.
@jeridansky The local residents salute you! 🫡☺️
@jkirkendall thank you for letting us know about this move! WaPo is a sinking ship and I'm glad CWG isn't going down with it.
@cherieherrjones Yes - they posted on Reddit how disheartened they were after the last round of layoffs. I'm so glad they have a path forward, out from under the WaPo.
