Wasps are sometimes a nuisance but definitely not a piece of shit

They are extremely important in the environment

Social wasps are predators and as such they play a vital ecological role, controlling the numbers of potential pests like greenfly and many caterpillars. Estimate for UK around 14 million kilograms of insects. imagine pesticides needed for that

And
wasps are also valuable pollinators, transferring pollen as they visit flowers to drink nectar. Essential, see fig wasp

@Kerplunk @cmconseils
Eh, yes. There's an issue with social wasps after their larvae mature. Larvae exude salivary secretions, rich in sugar and consumed by adults. When that sugar source is gone, wasps become aggressive (withdrawal symptoms, maybe?), as they try to find sugar elsewhere.

When I had a nest in the attic, in late summer I lured the wasps to a safe source, a feeder with natural sugars.

Wasps agressive. that generally happens when persons react with panic
trying to chase them away or disturb a nest.

Bees are FAR more dangerous and agressive.
.

@Kerplunk @cmconseils
We seem to agree for the most part. What I'm trying to say is that wasps are stressed at the end of the season, so they get aggressive more easily.

As a side note, if you're afraid of those dangerous honey bees, consider attracting their natural predators, the hornets (also wasps). They are not so dangerous, but their stings are FAR more painful, because they contain a large amount of acetylcholine.

Biology can be fun. 😉

@cmconseils I like my yellow jackets. Every spring they learn my face then don't bother me at all.
@cmconseils As highly efficient pest controllers, indispensable pollinators, and nature's clean-up crew, wasps are a central stabilizer of our ecosystem. Humans (and you and me) are not.
@cmconseils i understand that wasps are also important members of the ecosystem, but ive never gotten bitten by a bee or a bumblebee because theyve never acted aggressively towards people and thats always the wasps who are ready to lick watermellon juice from your lips and dont you dare not agree to it youll get free but painful lips inflation procedure
@ralen
Be that as it may, that doesn't make them a "piece of shit". In fact, from a neutral viewpoint, any species that puts the most damaging species on the planet in their place is to be applauded.
@cmconseils
@cmconseils always 2 the max, ain't?
@cmconseils 3: enemy who is still an important pollinator
Friend that need some personnal space, 'tis all :D

@cmconseils

Yellow jackets are an essential part of the ecosystem.

Yellow jackets are complete and total assholes.

Both are true.

@cmconseils
Piece of shit who stings you twice in the happy sacs then chases you down the path for half a mile as you run away howling like a baby.
Not speaking from personal experience at all, no, not me. Well yes they have a place in the ecosystem. A place reserved for little stingy bastards.
@cmconseils I see from the replies that you're getting schooled today in not disrespecting exploited workers on mastodon 😁
@cmconseils I feel like this info is super regional, Finnish wasps aren't very aggressive, they don't sting unless you slap them or actively poke at their nest (just like any other bee!). But people fear them to unnecessary extremes because they've seen cartoons about wasps from other continents, that are a different species.
@cmconseils wasps play no part in pollinating?
