"The time is coming when we’ll each have to declare our allegiance either to, or against, the Silicon Valley religion. This choice will be independent of whether we align ourselves with any traditional religion, or none at all: the question will simply be, do we put our faith in the ultimate authority of a machine god, built out of computer code and data centers, and owned by billionaire oligarchs?"

The pope and the machine god

Soon enough you'll be asked to put your faith in AI.

@markhurst let me just say fuck the Omnissiah and especially fuck the Adeptus Mechanicus.
@markhurst a good essay, but the company that builds the model is still the sole authority certifying it has an inner life. once that gets announced from the pulpit, the god-claim you can laugh off comes with a certification-claim you can't. doesn't matter how false the prophet. once the highest authority ratifies the self-certification, the product is authority. the Vatican ran a trade of this nature at least once before (Reichskonkordat 1933). https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2003/09/01/vatican-concordat-hitlers-reich-concordat-1933-was-ambiguous-its-day-and-remains/
The Vatican Concordat With Hitler’s Reich: The Concordat of 1933 was ambiguous in its day and remains so.

Seventy years ago a fateful meeting occurred in Rome. The Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli (the future Pope Pius XII), and Germany’s vice chancellor, Franz von Papen, formally signed a concordat between the Holy See and the German Reich on July 20, 1933.

@markhurst The time has passed.

We can't survive without this stuff, it's far too late and Leo mumbling tat about Orange Man + AI = Bad to distract from his global abuse network that makes Epstein look like a low level amateur doesn't matter.

That the argument seems to be: the bible says no seems beyond silly as Fediverse content.

If the anti-AI crowd actually get serious we are fucked: they won't take new vaccines as basic and the death tolls will be enormous.

@jamoquanty idk what anti ai crowd youre talking to because the anti ai crowd im part of is very strongly in support of vaccines

@stringlapse That's more the performative sector afaiu.

The peeps that want AI injected into their biology, using biometrics, real time maps, translators, fraud checks, radiology, cancer therapy etc but also chanting 'AI bad' from their smartphones whilst listening to a spotify algorithm for lolz.

@jamoquanty what the actual fuck are you even saying, none of this means anything

@stringlapse
We've been knee deep in AI for a long time.

If one was anti artificial intelligence then surely they would be avoiding the tech that leverages it.

If you are taking AI derived vaccines, using international banking systems, playing computer games, using chess apps and real time maps you are not anti-AI at all, you are the product of AI.

@jamoquanty "people who are anti ai but bank internationally are the product of ai" is a wild take
@stringlapse @jamoquanty Very "yet you participate in society" sort of rejoinder.

@nini @stringlapse it's more the chronically online computer nerds against technology that confuse me.

Mastodon in particular seems a world of very confused peeps addicted to computers whilst whining about them.

If you are using chess apps, search engines, vaccines, mobile phones, maps, algorithms etc you are the problem.

The peeps upset about a novel clippy instead of Google search are fucked, the people that don't know Google search has changed as they have never used it will be fine.

@stringlapse
Trolls gonna troll. Don't waste your energy.

@jamoquanty @markhurst Nah, the LLM business has some limited use cases in niche areas (mostly around code generation and analysis, interestingly enough).

Outside that, most sectors of the economy and society generally will be far better off once the bubble bursts (and, hopefully, takes a few would-be oligarchs with it).

@markhurst @AkaSci Any “god” that one can build is not worthy of worshipping.
@michaelgemar @markhurst @AkaSci once again Douglas Adams could foresee it all tho 😆
