🚨 Let's try some activism on fedi! The Tigard Public Library needs your help! CoT slashed the library budget, including cutting vital social services. But voters killed the new new Police / Public Works building they wanted to build, so now there are unallocated funds. There's community organizing and a petition to demand that CoT restore library services with that money. Many more specifics in the link 👇

Senet Game Bar on Instagram: "🚨 Urgent: Help Protect Tigard Library 🚨 This is a cause near and dear to Senet, our library is more than books!!!! It’s a safe community space for connection, learning, support, and resources for EVERYONE. The proposed FY27 city budget would:
-Cut the Library’s materials budget by nearly 30%
-Eliminate the Library Social Services Coordinator
-Remove key de-escalation & incident response positions These cuts would make the library less safe and less welcoming for patrons, staff, families, and vulnerable community members. They would also place more pressure on remaining staff and already overworked first responders. Please sign the petition linked in our bio so we can present it to City Council on June 9. Together, with your help we can protect Tigard’s amazing library!! Like and SHARE to help us spread the word!! https://www.fightforthefirst.org/petitions/tell-council-save-tigard-public-library-staff"

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good! If you can't make it to the council meetings, any support will be appreciated. Library staff read the public comments too and they've been giving us hope and morale

Tell Council: Save Tigard Public Library Staff

The proposed personnel cuts eliminate 3 positions from the Library's de-escalation/incident response team: 2 vacancies and the Library Social Services Coordinator. These staff cuts: • make the Library a less safe and welcoming space for everyone; • increase the workload for remaining staff, reducing their ability to provide core library services and programs; and • increase the Library's reliance on our already overworked first responders, reducing their ability to respond to critical...

Thank you to everyone who has shared this! đź’ś The post has escaped the  Portland area, so I feel I have a duty to remind y'all that local governments care less about you the farther you live from their border.

But there are many locals here I'm not connected to. If you have the ability to steer this info back towards any contacts/friends/family who live in or near the Portland area (or especially in the City of Tigard), that would be amazingly helpful! 💪 ✊

There were two excellent in-person comments about the library budget at last night's council meeting. Jessica talked about her family's struggles when she was young and how the teachers, librarians, and social workers in her life helped her get where she is today. It's worth a watch! (Each comment is limited to 2 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/live/AXZ4t8rLwm0?t=4993

The petition already has 533 signatures! For comparison, that's 3.3% of the number of active voters in Tigard.

The petition has 1069 signatures so far! For comparison, that's 6.6% of the number of people who voted in Tigard in the recent election. I would hope any politician would think twice before pissing off that large a chunk of their constituency, but we'll see!

I'll be at the council meeting this evening, but I don't know if I'll speak yet. We're worried about giving the impression that this is only something library staff care about, so we want to let community members speak as much as possible.

I talked to the council! That was fun…if you like the kind of fun that makes your heart race. My comment starts at 1:28:58, but they're all worth a watch! We all had very different things to say. It's great to see so many people from the local community show up to support the library!
