Live jazz piano performance of the timeless ballad “Alice in Wonderland” 🎹✨
Composed by Sammy Fain with lyrics by Bob Hilliard for Disney’s 1951 animated classic. Originally a dreamy opening/closing theme sung by chorus in the film, it evolved into one of the most beautiful jazz standards.
Performed by pianist Ralston Van Der Schyff. Listen to the live recording:

Improvised Piano Performances, based on a selection of Golden Jazz Standards. Recorded live & unedited. performed by Ralston Van Der Schyff.

What makes this song special? Its gentle, waltzing melody perfectly captures the whimsical, floating feeling of Wonderland.
It’s been recorded by jazz giants like:

- Bill Evans (his haunting Village Vanguard version is legendary)
- Oscar Peterson
- Dave Brubeck

…and many others.
Ted Gioia even called Evans’ take one of his most pristinely beautiful performances.

The original film version was in G major, but jazz musicians often play it in C major for that warm, flowing feel.
The harmony is rich with ii-V progressions that give improvisers plenty of room to explore — which is why it became a favorite among pianists and small ensembles.
Pure magic from a children’s film that grew into sophisticated jazz art.
Hope you enjoy this performance! Let me know your favorite jazz standard in the comments 🎶
