While cycling through the Port of Rotterdam alongside the wind turbines, I was surprised to spot a large battery energy storage system, but here's where the story gets even more interesting: This is Wind Park Hartel 2 owned by Greenchoice, home to 8 Alstom's turbines, 3 MW each,built by Ballast Nedam. In 2018, Alfen installed the Netherlands’ first large-scale battery storage project here: a 10 MW / 10 MWh system. Fast forward to 2025: the original system was relocated to another trading hub, making way for an upgraded 20 MW / 40 MWh energy storage facility on the same site, using CATL batteries. A curious example of repurposing assets and scaling renewable integration in one of Europe’s busiest ports.
