Had occasion during conversation today to coin the phrase “shibboleth of perfidy“, and I am immensely pleased with myself. Channeling Tycho at Penny-Arcade over here.

[ context: online anger over use of spell/grammar checking tools because they apparently make writing sound more “AI-generated”. Such a bizarre timeline we live in, where tools once considered best practices for all professionals are now a “shibboleth of perfidy.”

Of course, no AI would ever generate such an arcane construction, so I guess that puts me above suspicion. 😅 ]

If you’ve ever wondered about the value of a liberal arts education, well, there it is
(To be fair this is really the value of reading all the time; education is orthogonal. Oops, I did it again.)

@darkuncle Not sure of the specifics of the discussion, but I will say that I believe some tools like Grammarly can start the blur the distinction between grammar checking an writing things for you, which might be the genesis of this attitude.

Personally, though, I'd be lost without spellcheck.

@internic I find myself arguing with the grammar checker, at least half the time

@darkuncle

#shibboleth is of my favorite words and I first learned it watching an episode of The West Wing.
