Among the many things these albums express - particularly In Utero - is a deep rage and despair. Unlike their grunge contemporaries Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and even Alice in Chains, whose albums explore dark themes in a more psychedelic way, Nirvana's darkness is raw and bleeding. It's powerful music, but not beautiful, nor comfortable.
I doubt a band like Nirvana would have gone mainstream in the age of streaming algorithms. It's anything but background music.
