Just listened to In Utero for the first time in years. Now I know why I don't return to Nirvana's albums very often, despite them being sublime works of art IMHO.

Among the many things these albums express - particularly In Utero - is a deep rage and despair. Unlike their grunge contemporaries Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and even Alice in Chains, whose albums explore dark themes in a more psychedelic way, Nirvana's darkness is raw and bleeding. It's powerful music, but not beautiful, nor comfortable.

I doubt a band like Nirvana would have gone mainstream in the age of streaming algorithms. It's anything but background music.

@strypey "In Utero" has a soul and a depth. It feels like a journey through depressed philosophers highschool journal.

That, and their "Unplugged" are arguably their best work and both are still deeply meaningful listens today.

Listening to them hits the same buttons in my psyche as listening to the Blues. The "realness" of someone's heart pouring out everything they are right there.
