🚨FYI on what went down Mon in Newark, #NewJersey at the #Dilley Detention Center where #detainees are on a hunger strike to protest conditions.

NJ pols (all #democrats) showed up to support detainees and protesters, incl Gov #MikieSherrill - denied entry to Dilly - and #AndyKim who was there when #ICE, damn them, got aggressive.

Andy was trying to defuse the situation & they pepper sprayed him anyway! Let that sink in: ICE gassed a sitting US Senator. 😑

#fuckICE

ICE agents pepper-spray protesters, N.J. senator in clash outside Delaney Hall in Newark

β€œIt’s sad, it’s a sad day," says pepper-sprayed senator.

The picture of #AndyKim receiving treatment in the article above is truly stunning and awful in the same moment. (I wouldn't be surprised if the photographer is recognized for it somehow.)

Anyway, I'll be calling Senator Kim's office first thing this morning to thank him for his efforts. #NewJersey peeps, please consider doing the same. Here's his DC office phone number: 202-224-4744

@PamelaBarroway
Andy Kim is the real deal. There us not much of that in DC today. Remember when he cleaned up at the Capitol, after the January 6 visit by peaceful tourists now eligible for bribes paid by the regime β€”

@RunRichRun He truly is. Fun fact: I met and canvassed for #AndyKim in NJ-03 in 2017 when he first ran for Congress! A real mensch.

He is also the most decent of human beings who would never hurt anyone. Which makes it all the more outrageous that #ICE pepper sprayed him! 😑

@PamelaBarroway

Still waiting for the New York Times story on this

@mastodonmigration Huh. I wonder what lame take and wishy-washy headline will appear when they finally get around to it.

The NJcom article is actually quite good -- short and to the point.

@mastodonmigration PS I'll post any articles the Philly Inquirer has here, and I'll use my sub to gift them.

@PamelaBarroway

It really is amazing how few majors have picked up this story.

@PamelaBarroway

Finally USA Today has the story:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2026/05/25/andy-kim-pepper-sprayed-after-visiting-new-jersey-ice-detention-center/90255993007/

EDIT: But, what's with this 'says'. Like, maybe the US Senator from NJ is making this up?

Senator says he was pepper-sprayed amid 'chaos' at ICE facility in NJ

Sen. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat, said he was pepper sprayed during a visit to Delaney Hall in Newark on Memorial Day.

USA TODAY

@PamelaBarroway

The Hill has it, with a better headline:

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5894457-andy-kim-pepper-sprayed-delaney-hall/

"Senate Democrat pepper sprayed at protest outside ICE detention facility in New Jersey"

@mastodonmigration Now that's a headline! Not a huge fan of The Hill, but credit where credit is due -- they did not pull any punches, and it shows.
@PamelaBarroway @mastodonmigration I'll predict the NY Times headline: "Did Sen. Kim needlessly provoke ICE?"

@PamelaBarroway

It is much better. Can you imagine if Lindsay Graham were pepper sprayed during a Dem administration? The New York Times would devote the front page for an entire month to it.

@mastodonmigration My eyes cannot roll back far enough at these ledes. FFS he was PEPPER SPRAYED. Just say it:

"ICE pepper sprayed Senator Andy Kim"

How hard is that? πŸ™„

@mastodonmigration @PamelaBarroway he’s not the type to make shit up and be hyperbolic.
