@dogzilla
This burn is beautiful. Here with added #alttext
@Fluse @dogzilla I think the definition of a better world, call it socialism or whatever, will be: "Just better at accounting..."
@Fluse @dogzilla "you are asking why our restaurant menu lists higher prices than your restaurant menu but customers say they get full at our restaurantโ€”that's because, you are not comparing one meal with the same meal over here. We are an all-you-can-eat restaurant."
@shaedrich @Fluse @dogzilla "And we do not include a compulsory 20% service charge onto the end of our bills - that's included in the higher prices."
@HollieK72 @shaedrich @Fluse @dogzilla Thatโ€™s called, โ€œpaying the staff.โ€
@su_liam @HollieK72 @Fluse @dogzilla We take statutory minimum wage seriously over here in European countries so people don't need to solely rely on tipping
@shaedrich @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla When I first heard about tipped wages, I couldn't believe it. How can so many states pay $2.13 per hour and get away with it by saying it's okay if the staff make at least $30 tips per month?

@shaedrich @HollieK72 @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla

Whenever you come upon something in the US that seems totally confounding, the answer is always: racism.

https://www.povertylaw.org/article/the-racist-history-behind-americas-tipping-culture/

The Racist History Behind Americaโ€™s Tipping Culture - Shriver Center on Poverty Law

Federal and state laws allow employers to pay some workers, generally those who receive tips, less than the minimum wage. The Illinois tipped wage is currently $4.95 per hour. While our city, and much of the nation, is fighting for a higher minimum wage, let us also fight for one fair wage โ€” because no one should have to depend on unpredictable tips for a living.

Shriver Center on Poverty Law

@minmi @shaedrich @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla

I mean, WTF is a subminimum wage?

"The federal tipped subminimum wage has remained at $2.13 per hour since 1991."

@minmi @shaedrich @HollieK72 @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla Yep, Pretty much always racism (add tipping to the list of redistricting in the South, the Destruction of the Education system, the closure of public swimming pools, a woman's right to choose....: https://mastodon.social/@alnitak/116584725766614161
@HollieK72 @shaedrich @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla from a country that doesn't do tipping, it seems like $30 tips per month is somehow not enough to compensate for being paid almost nothing per hour. It's possible I've made some mistake with exchange rates or something, but otherwise this sounds a bit like slavery really.
@bencourtice @HollieK72 @shaedrich @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla that must be a typo or be 1930 dollars or something!

@ehproque @bencourtice @shaedrich @su_liam @Fluse @dogzilla

Unfortunately it is NOT a typo. Wait staff can be paid very low wages, as long as tips make it up to equal the minimum wage.

The United States federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees who receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any week, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.

@shaedrich @Fluse @dogzilla also the yanks are not showing prices including tax so they get ripped off twice
@Fluse @dogzilla US taxes are like shopping at Wal*Mart. You pay less at the checkstand, but youโ€™ll keep paying. Once youโ€™ve replaced the cheap* boots a hundred times, youโ€™ve paid ten times as much and never been comfortable.
@Fluse @dogzilla its like that meme, "Everybody agrees with it until you say its name: socialism".
@Fluse @dogzilla
Your alt-text doesn't draw enough attention to the red boxes drawn around every bit of text to hilight the whole contents of both posts - this is a very important part of the content
@Fluse @dogzilla + Janteloven. Not to forget, the Janteloven approach. But the other thing is also key.
I dont know its almost like if everyone pools their money together and buys in bulk you get a better deal. Nah that couldn't be it.
@Fluse @dogzilla
@Fluse @dogzilla Something tells me Alex.Karlsen will easily shrug this off. Americans are ready to tear out their neighbour's eyes because of how terrible things are getting, but don't you dare suggest they have anything to learn from anyone else. They'll take their socialism in the form of GoFundMe campaigns the moment someone gets sick, thank you very much. They'll be reduced to asking for charity when the time comes. Until then, self-reliance!!!

@schamspeare @Fluse @dogzilla

He will have a moment of cognitive dissonance and then convince himself โ€œitโ€™s because everyone is white there.โ€

@schamspeare @Fluse @dogzilla thatโ€™s a good point.

โ€œNo way am I paying into a pool to help other people get medical care, but you better contribute to my go fund me because I canโ€™t afford my meds and health insurance wonโ€™t pay for them!!โ€.

@Fluse @dogzilla thank god they added the red circles otherwise i would have no idea where to look

@Fluse @dogzilla I would argue socialists *are* better at accounting, but also that they/we reach the logical conclusion that it's better to improve everybody's lives to only marginally improve the lives of the richest among us at the cost everyone else's lives being horrible.

But yes. Genuinely a sick burn.

โ€˜The nurse told me I couldnโ€™t keep my babyโ€™: how a controversial Danish โ€˜parenting testโ€™ separated a Greenlandic woman from her children

Two hours after Keira Alexandra Kronvold gave birth, her daughter was taken from her โ€“ the third child to be removed from her care following a now-banned assessment that disproportionately targets Inuit women in Denmark. Will she win the fight to get Zammi back?

@peterrenshaw @Fluse @dogzilla A stone thrown from the Australian glasshouse where indigenous people have always been treated wonderfully, and actual point ignored? Okay, champ.

@samueljohnson if you know the environment โ€œdry sclerophyll forestโ€ in the driest continent, understand the design โ€œLifting the building on stilts like this also allows air to circulate more freelyโ€; The siting on a hill; Youโ€™d realise, no matter what the construction material is, it will burn (deform the iron) to the ground.

@peterrenshaw Your seldomlogical domain may be pertinent but I don't see any connection with your original snidery about Denmark and won't be engaging further. Bye.
@Fluse @dogzilla That is so true. It shows how limited the US thinking is. They can't see the whole picture, hence they bomb Iran without thinking of consequences.
@Fluse @dogzilla added more red lines
@gonzo_askold @Fluse @dogzilla Thank you, red highlighter! I finally get it!
@gonzo_askold @Fluse @dogzilla These are the red linea I want to see in the Fediverse. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค

@Fluse @LabSpokane @dogzilla It also indicates how stupid so many Americans are when we need this simple thing explained to us.

Just doing away with my monthly healthcare bill (before Medicare) would have saved me $11,400 per year. And if I had gotten sick I'd be on the hook for a $7000 deductible. Yes, I'd be willing to pay all of that in taxes to get good worry free healthcare.

#TIL how to repost a graphic with #alttext, rather than just refusing to boost a great image that was posted without alttext.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Because it's done as a *reply*, you can still scroll up and see who the OP is, if you care: @dogzilla

Folks, remember to post with alttext or we won't boost you! #mastodon

@Fluse @dogzilla
What radicalized me besides a million other things? Receiving a paper check for $0 at my first job as a restaurant server in 2004. Actually given by the manager a paper check in an envelope in the amount of $0.
@1000millimeter @Fluse @dogzilla
Tips were taxed. The taxes owed were more than the paycheck would have been at 2$ an hour. Even though most of the time, I would walk out with $30 on a (5 hour shift) good night. Southern USA.
@starstuft @Fluse @dogzilla Did you have to pay additional taxes on the tips then?
@ghost_shit
Why does Denmark consistently rank among the happiest countries?
Denmark vs Australia.
77 vs 33% renewables.
Denmark is also home to Vestas, 100% renewables company who are struggling to gain approvals in Australia. eg Winterbourne in Walcha, NSW, which *just happens* to be in Barnaby Joyce's electorate of New England.
