So, I had planned a day where I was just making creole gumbo. And then I made the mistake of opening my news app, and now…ya know, Jeezy creezy, why does the #GOP have to speedrun the death of all things?

#Cyanide bombs, or #M44, are mechanical devices previously used primarily for predator control. They are designed to eject sodium cyanide when triggered by an animal. The Biden administration banned them on public land after a kid and his dog triggered one, killing the dog instantly. The kid survived, but not without a lot of intervention.

See, the thing is, dogs can’t read. Frankly, I’m not many people can. A spring loaded trap that shoots out a radius of cyanide into the environment seems like a bad idea. A much worse idea than learning to live with coyotes. #Coyotes are just little dudes, ya know?

Apex predators are a necessary part of the cycle. The GOP on the other hand, I think we can live without.

Trump Administration Quietly Green-lights Use of ‘Cyanide Bombs’ on Public Lands

This controversial predation control tactic has been banned since 2023, but now, the Bureau of Land Management will be allowed to use it on a "case-by-case" basis.

@MissConstrue I wonder how they'd like cyanide bombs in their boardrooms, spas, yachts, and offices. Does that even require a permit now?

@MissConstrue I cannot believe this is real.

I mean

Seriously?

How is this different from simply laying mines and placing a "Danger, mines" sign?

@MissConstrue Just plant the things on golf courses. So many problems solved.

meanwhile, always interested in a gumbo recipe ...

@Beatpoet13 I did this one in a crockpot, and it worked! I started by sauteing the Trinity plus garlic, when they were soft I added andouille (sliced into coins) and cooked that all until the sausage was brown and I had a good fond on the bottom, then tossed flour (handful....1/2 cup?), and kept that moving until I had a golden roux, tempered chicken stock in; seasoned with the usual suspects; cayenne, black pepper, salt, paprika, bay leaf. Tomatoes and whitefish in after stock, if used, shellfish/crawdads not much before serving, cause nobody wants rubbery shellfish.

I kinda take both sides of the gumbo argument re: proteins and tomatoes, and just use it all. Whatever is handy, makes good gumbo. :)

I used tomatoes today, cause I'm making etoufee tomorrow, and I didn't want them to be too similar. ;) (Why yes, yes I did luck into a bunch of crawdads and am trying to use them up. Heh.)

@MissConstrue
well merci beaucoup, I kinda can taste it from way across da waters, I remember times of no food when we'd share recipes around till all felt fed on imagination, woken up inda coldest o night n just talk cooking till early dawn lay us back to rest for a while, like I 'm seeing yr gumbo right now, cheers & hope ya have plenty fun people to share yr cooking with ...

@Beatpoet13 Gumbo is sort of the American South’s version of Stone Soup. The more the merrier, and everything in the pot. 🥰. When I was in uni, many decades ago, I rented an old Victorian house that did not meet any level of code or safety, but we could put a dozen of us in it, and we all shared resources, but I was the house cook because Stone Soup was my specialty. 🤷🏻‍♀️🥳🤣.
