Hey friends, I need to vent a little. 🌱

I've been fighting an internal battle for years: am I the only one feeling this tug-of-war?

On one side, the seduction of the "smart" life:
• Android Auto knowing where I live before I type it.
• AI editing my photos instantly.
• Smartwatches tracking my sleep & steps.
• Endless Reels curated just for me, trapping me for hours.

It feels magical, but the cost is handing our data to the "sharks." 🦈

On the other side, the quiet freedom of FOSS & Linux.

Simplicity. Security. No profiles drawn about me. No corporations monitoring my clicks. Navigating with VPN & Tor to stay invisible.

It's safer and respects anonymity, but sometimes I feel I'm missing out on the seamless ease of the modern world.

I love tech, but my heart belongs to freedom.

So, tell me honestly:

Do you feel this split too? Is it possible to have conveniences without surveillance? Or do we eventually have to choose between total freedom and total convenience?

I'd love to read your stories. Where do you stand? 👇

@infravermelho I don't feel this split. I prefer the old school life without any of the nonsense, that you describe as "magic" (because it really isn't. Every magic is underneath just a system that is fed with data and produces output).

@realestninja Great point: "magic" is just data systems monetized by Big Tech.

But can we escape the Matrix? We rely on Big Tech daily: social media for family/work, and smartphones. Custom ROMs or Linux phones exist but remain limited. Corporations dominate our lives; total escape is nearly impossible.

I started this to hear the community's view: For those prioritizing privacy, what is your limit?

Looking forward to your perspectives.

@realestninja @infravermelho
It does not have to be completely either/or. I heavily lean into the privacy side, but use some magic tools for certain jobs (eg very limited use of Ai for certain types of questions), or instances (Google maps for specific navigation questions not answered by my OSM apps). But, I absolutely not letting Al into my phone or computer to scoop up all my data for convenience's sake.
