After a year of running Nextcloud storage [1] at Hetzner, I noticed that I hardly use it. Sure, it's nice to have 1TB of storage at around €5/mo, but I simply haven't found a good way to make it part of my digital life. I will experiment with running my own Garage based S3 compatible storage [2] on one of my VPS machines instead (yes, my VPSs have unlimited network traffic).

Managed nextcloud: cheap cloud storage

Managed nextcloud by Hetzner: safe, cheap cloud storage. ✓ GDPR-compliant ✓ simple and custom ✓ 100 % green electricity

@jwildeboer I used to do this too, but now I have 1 TB “lifetime” at Koofr (they use Hetzner too). They’re just better than I’ll ever be at maintaining a service like that.

@jwildeboer Yeah, I could get by with less storage, but the backup policy, global availability, security and uptime would be hard to replicate reliably for myself for 5€ 😅

I basically pay them to have about 5 files and a few calendar events available over the internet.

@jwildeboer @homelab I run Nextcloud at my homelab with Pangolin for Domain mapping. Works great for me.

@jwildeboer @homelab similar. In my private digital life I don't have a need for something so feature rich as nextcloud.

Syncthing and offline apps cover 99% of what I need.

rclone and restic take care of backups.

@jwildeboer @homelab I use it quite a lot (thanks for the tip BTW) but I do wonder whether I should go back to self-hosted as there are a couple of things that would be useful that it doesn't do.
@jwildeboer @homelab Funny for me to read that today. I am also wondering if I should still use the Hetzner Cloud I pay for each month. But I also know that I have a reliable and secure hosting there, for all my personal data. Should I make the switch to home hosting ? I already use Tailscale to connect to the TrueNAS server at home for small services. 🤔
@jwildeboer I just run nextcloud in a container locally, used to share the odd file or picture with friends/family, and use its webDAV functionality to backup my Boox notebook.
Do you run it offsite for load or security?
@homelab
@jwildeboer @homelab I have a Hetzner Storage Box permanently mounted on my VPS and works more or less decently. I have indeed yet to find a place to get storage this cheap.
@jwildeboer @homelab i run nextcloud, Immich, forgejo and wordpress in containers on a hetzner virtual server, works great for us, sharing docs, photos and code.

I totally rely on Nextcloud for synching Contacts, Calendars and my Notes. Photo backup and gallery. Document access from everywhere. Large data sharing with others.
Without Nextcloud I don't know how to do all this.
I'm thinking of moving to Hetzner 5€ from a free plan. I'd rather pay 2€ for 100Gb though, if I could find one.
