Anyone done any #MetalDetecting around #Warrnambool?

I think this #coin is #Portuguese maybe? No idea of the date.

A tiny silver thing that is about sixpence sized.

@John

This coin is a silver 80 Réis from Portugal, featuring a cross with quatrefoils in the angles on the reverse.

The text reads "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES", which translates to "In this sign you shall conquer."

Coins with this design were minted during the reigns of various Portuguese monarchs, including Pedro II, João V, and Maria I, ranging from the late 17th to the late 18th century.

These coins were typically struck in silver, with a fineness of approximately 0.917.

@John oh, and your example was minted during the reign of Pedro II (PETRVS II), 1683-1706.

Bugger! The reward is no longer on offer!

“A A$250,000 reward was offered by the Victorian state government in 1992 to anyone who could locate the #MahoganyShip, a legendary, long-lost 19th-century shipwreck believed to be buried in sand dunes between #Warrnambool and #PortFairy in Victoria, Australia. The offer was withdrawn in 1993 without being claimed.”

@John

Darn.

It might stir up the whole question/controversy again though, so that could be fun.
