I'm usually pretty good about this. I never "work until I drop," and I always feel like I know the stopping point. Having MS, I've learned to know my body pretty well. I know what I need. But if I still have ideas after I've stopped writing for the day, I'll jot them down on my phone. Sometimes, I'll be writing late at night and then head to sleep right after. I'll be lying in bed, and I'm suddenly flooded with ideas. I'll just roll over, groan in annoyance, and reach for my phone to scribble things down for the following day or whenever.

There's no better feeling than being in the zone. When the muse comes a'knocking, we can't ignore it!

Hati both loves and loathes how outspoken (and brave) she is. It gets her into trouble a lot. Think about it this way… This story takes place in 1890, and she’s a woman. For Fenella and Alistair, it’s time spent in the library. Wrapped up in one another on the sofa, both of them reading, a fire warming the room from the hearth, et cetera. Memories like those have withstood the test of time for the pair. If they’re lucky, they might end up together again before the end. (As of right now, they’re only friends but were lovers for a long time.)

For Samuel and Hati, it was the day he realized they could be mates. They talk about it now and have a laugh. He caught her scent and they made eye contact at a party on the Winnter Solstice. They drank, talked about anything and everything, realized how similar they were, and became friends. Much later, they became more, once she realized it as well (that they were meant to be mates, that is).

Alistair: I can’t remember my childhood, not anymore. I don’t know if I was an only child or one of many. It’s a depressing thought. But if I had to choose, and if in this scenario I was still a mortal, I would say that to come from a rather large family sounds comforting and I would lean towards that option. The more, the merrier. In the end, yes, I would rather have siblings aplenty.

I started writing when I was kiddo. I don’t remember my age, but I just know that I was really young. I always played TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons or DnD, though, and I’ve always adored that sort of thing. Storytelling, acting, ren fairs, etc. My dad loved bringing that out of me as a kid, especially when he was reading to me or encouraging my writing. Going on hikes with a walking stick and pretending we were hobbits on a long journey and all that. Telling stories is just in my blood. I’m a lot like my daddoo.

I can’t recall ever enjoying something quite this much. Everything changed for me around the fifth chapter, and I’m loving the way things are going. I changed the universe’s entire lore based on a wild idea that came to me one night and my girlfriend told me to, and I quote, “go for it,” and I’ve changed everything about who and what Alistair truly is. It was a huge revelation on my part, seeing as I’ve written stories with him for over a decade. He’s different now, and it’s wonderfully refreshing and fun. What I’ve come up with, and how things have changed, added so much depth and substance to the story itself, and made a series all the more possible because this *has* turned into a series by now.

She’s the first person he has told (about who and what he is) in ages, and he comes right out and says it, even if it requires a bit of poking and prodding on her end. A confession of that calibre is pure bravery.

Oooh, this is a good prompt. I’m glad I had this one saved. Vampires have their “children,” meaning the ones they’ve sired and made bloodbound AKA those they’ve turned into fellow vampires. They aren’t blood children, of course, but the familial relationship is very similar. Things tend to work in the same way. Alistair would want his bloodbound one/ones to survive and thrive, and they would need no help in doing so. He’s sure of that fact. Duncan would be just fine in that respect. He doesn’t require Alistair’s fellow existence to keep on living. There’s no plan needed in the event that he was to ever die.

I see a path filled with growth, and growth is definitely the word for it. This is a good question. It’s really hard to answer, though. We all grow and change as time goes on and we continue to hone our craft. One thing that I will say is that imposter syndrome doesn’t hit me anymore and it hasn’t in quite some time. I guess I could say that I don’t think I “suck” at writing anymore, and a younger version of me from even ten years ago would have been left aghast and gasping at that. I see my stories and writing style progressing, developing, and improving, even from the things I published and let loose on the world years ago. So, that’s a nice thought. I'm rather proud. I just... never really think about it.

Starting this hashtag has helped me with my writing journey so much. Words wouldn’t suffice. It makes me think about storytelling in a different way. Not only do I want to help myself but I also want to help other writers. The things that we might not think about, the little details, everything about background characters, etc. I’ve grown since I began this writing prompt hashtag, as a thinker and a writer.

Alistair can’t remember that far back in his past, to be fair. For Hati, it was art. She gave up the habit ages ago, even if Alistair has tried to encourage her to enjoy the creativity and freedom of it again. So, for her, it was her art supplies. It isn’t so much an item as items, plural, but it still counts.

#PennedPossibilities 995 — How do you balance making (emotional) demands on the reader with taking care of them?

There’s a lot to be said about a comfortable balance and how hard it is to be achieved. We must take care of our readers — all while also putting them through the wringer on occasion, as it were. I’ve never been sure how to approach this or how to fully achieve it. I try to do my best. Apparently, whatever I’m doing is actually working because my readers are always happy, content, and left craving more. I suppose I won’t and can’t question things any more than that.

(I’m going out later, so this one will be a bit early. I hope no one minds.)

Here’s a few bits and bobs that I loved writing. These are in no particular order. I will, however, state who says a particular line if it happens to be a quote or offer some context.

• “Every corner of this heart is haunted. You are the ghoul, the specter of my past, and yet I wouldn’t trade a single memory of you for the world. I pray only that you continue to haunt me, Fen.” — Alistair (to Fenella)

• Even the shops had taken on an uncommon grimness, with their hard facades of marble and granite, the wealth within gleaming like archaeological relics under museum glass. (Gothic vibes, hell yes.)

• Looking at her felt like leaning too close to a dying fire, the heat muted, the flames gone, but the coals glowing red, alive in silence. (This is a line about Hati’s wolf eyes.)

• The room was dark, shadows playing on the walls as he lit a lamp on his bedside table. (Again, so simple and yet so utterly gothic, and I love it.)

• “Even in silence, my heart still whispers your name.” — Alistair (to Fenella)

• His eyes were dark and steely. They looked like storm clouds pressed into color, grey not as absence, but as tension, alive and waiting. (A line about Alistair’s vampiric eyes.)

#PennedPossibilities 997 — Tell us about a particular “dream” or desire that your antagonist has.

To be left alone. To be allowed to wreak the havoc he enjoys so much. To leave the wreckage behind him as he goes. In reality, Isma wants for nothing else. He is a “simple” creature. Otherwise, he lacks nothing in terms of necessities or comforts. The man is a whirlwind of destruction, death, bloodshed, and a desire to torture, but he’s so much more than that. He can also be a clever mastermind, helpful, a voracious reader, wanting to learn everything that can be taught, a teacher to those he deems worthy of friendship, and he avidly enjoys the arts. His pros do not make up for the cons, but again, a layered antagonist can make all the difference in the world.

Hati is a strong, independent woman, despite having a mate and being married to him. She can take care of herself. Sometimes, however, her mouth gets her into a heap of trouble. Of course, she always strives to be careful of this, as one typically does, but her temper can occasionally get the best of her. She has never claimed to be perfect. As for other (good) attributes, let’s list some: caring, affectionate, accepting, compassionate, warmhearted, creative.

We all have our pros and cons, and Hati is no different in that way, but those are some of her good points. Again, she isn’t perfect, but she tries to be a good person (and wolf). In the end, that’s really all that matters.

Of course. Alistair bathes daily. Fenella does as well. Hygiene between the cast of characters isn’t a problem in this story, but we also have to consider the fact that this is the tail end of the Victorian era, and showers, for the obvious reasons, aren’t a thing yet. Also, (were)wolves and vampires aspire to be clean beings.

#PennedPossibilities 1000 — Speaking of the changes since this project’s start, how do you think you’ve grown as a writer since this hashtag began? Have you published anything? Have your writing habits changed?

HAPPY 1000 PROMPTS! 🫶🏻

I mentioned the other day that this hashtag has helped me in many ways. For one, I write on a more regular schedule these days. The prompts I create often help me whenever I’m stuck on certain scenes. An idea might come to me after I’ve written an answer that might be from the MC or SC POV, and that’s a brilliant and helpful thing. I’ve made friends along the way, all of whom help me strive to become better at my craft. I’ve enjoyed helping others as well, of course. I’ve published a lot of things since the start date, and I’ve become more confident in my writing as well. I can only hope that we all feel that way. My writing habits have changed so much as well. I'm healthier about it. Like I said, I’m on more of a regular schedule, from writing, sharpening sentences and dialogue, proofreading, and editing, just all throughout the process and with everything that needs to be done. It comes easier for me now.

I’ve changed a lot since July of 2023. I feel like I was a totally different writer three years ago, to be honest. That’s a great feeling. So, yes, I’ve grown a great deal, and Mastodon can take the majority of the credit for that change, right along with running this hashtag.

On occasion, he can be. When the moment calls for it, that is. Sometimes, there’s even prodding from friends involved. Other times, especially when it comes to intimate matters of the heart, Alistair remains silent (and unsure of himself). He’s always been a certain way — and not to be forgotten, he's also ancient and stubborn, so changing is *nearly* out of the question at this point.

Fenella, on the other hand, always has been and always will be. Confidence isn’t a problem of hers. (Unless we’re referring to the way she feels about Alistair, that is. There’s a significant lack of confidence there, to be honest.)

#PennedPossibilities 1004 — If they have any, tell us about your MC’s philosophical beliefs.

Ooooh, let’s get down to the nitty gritty with this one. Philosophical beliefs are guiding principles or worldviews that shape how individuals understand reality, morality, and existence. I’ve never really thought about this in reference to this specific WIP of mine, but it felt so easy once I sat down and really delved deeply into my answer for the prompt.

Alistair:
• Socratic Method: Developed by Socrates, this belief emphasizes questioning assumptions and engaging in dialogue to seek truth, fostering critical thinking rather than accepting ideas at face value.
• Introspection: The practice of examining one’s own mind and beliefs to gain self-knowledge and understanding. (All Alistair ever does is think, think, and think some more.)

The thing about Fenella is that I can’t quite pin her or explain her beliefs. The only thing that comes to mind is “Justice for Women” because of everything she’s done in her life, considering how she’s helped women steadily for nearly a decade. She dedicated her life to the cause.

Not to be forgotten, this is also the tail end of the Victorian era. That plays a major role in all this. It matters a great deal. Times were different. The days were much harder back then, even for vampires.

#PennedPossibilities 1005 — What type of clothing does your SC typically wear?

Samuel is easy to pin here. Mind you, again, it’s the end of the Victorian era.

I’ll break things down a bit as I go.

• Practicality: Clothing was durable and functional, often consisting of mismatched jackets and vests to save money. (Yet he still manages to look fantastic. Hati always tells him so.)
• Materials: Workers wore wool, corduroy, or heavy cottons in dark, somber colors to hide dirt and wear. (Samuel does just this, of course. He’s a worker with a tough job.)
• Footwear and Headwear: Lace-up boots and simple caps or worn-out bowlers were common, prioritizing protection over style. (Sam prefers caps to what he calls “poncy bowlers,” truth be told.)

#PennedPossibilities 1006 — How would your characters describe their community or communities?

Typically, it’s cold, miserable, unforgiving, and tough. Vampires are a reclusive bunch and aren’t likely to help one another if they’re strangers. Werewolves, on the other hand, are either found in small packs or simply with a mate. Their groups are very, very small. At times, when the planets align (lol), these communities can also be caring and supportive to friends and family members. Also of note, vampires and werewolves do not get along and are not meant to ever become friends (or more). Alistair and Hati broke that rule. He’s a vampire and she’s a werewolf, and yet they’re close friends. Their small circle can’t understand why immortal beings can’t just get along. There are mortals and immortals. You’re either one or the other, so why does it matter what sort of immortal you are? The hatred is unneeded.

I have, actually. My girlfriend and I are currently writing a story that another friend of mine is translating into Korean to share with other readers. It’s very sweet. It means a ton to us.

Edit: Jon does but only for reading. Caden also wears a fake pair of spectacles most of the time, so people won't suspect a thing. FYI: He's a vampire, of course.

#PennedPossibilities 1010 — What are any of your characters hiding? (A fantasy, fear, strength, talent, an unpopular or controversial opinion, prejudice, etc.) Why are they hiding it?

Alistair has a huge secret that he’s hiding but I can’t reveal it or speak about it just yet. It’s written, of course, but not yet published for readers. He hasn’t revealed it yet (and won’t ever tell anyone) because it would be world-shattering. As far as Fenella goes, she was also hiding something. It was the truth about her travels around the world, the profession she chose, and what she did to help the women she met. Caden is hiding a secret as well. He’s a Dreamcaster. You’ll just have to read the story to learn what that means.
