Umeboshi have been a staple of the Japanese diet since at least the Heian Period (794–1185). They were famously used as field rations by samurai during the Sengoku period because of their high citric acid content (which aids energy recovery) and natural preservative properties. Today, they are still considered a "superfood" in Japan, used as a remedy for hangovers, to stimulate digestion, and to boost the immune system.
