@BrianBinh @pteryx I have read various opinions from the people involved at TSR and WotC during the acquisition, and I could see why TSR made a lot of campaign settings in the 2E era. Because of their agreement with Random House, they got paid (at first) for product they put out (paid by Random House) but it was like a loan of sorts. Random House expected the product to sell. When it did not, they then called in all the chips and TSR would have gone under if WotC did not step in a buy them.
So back in the late 80s, early 90s, TSR sort of had a blank check to experiment with different products. But it was more like a dangerous IOU.
@pteryx I was not sure how the poll was going to go. I did think Basic D&D would get more votes because that term covers a lot of similar editions. But you can only have like 8 options in a poll.
Very interesting that 3E is the winner. I wonder how Pathfinder would have fared.
