Just got my chronic open-source fever again. When that happens, I go on hours trying to figure out how to replace "evil" services with open-source ones. Last time I deleted Instagram, Threads, X, and Linkedin, and moved here intead. This time trying to figure out whether it's time to ditch Google and move to Proton. I am not sure it's quite there yet for me but getting close. Any thoughts?

@tsuri_by What Google components are you wanting to replace?
@rspfau Drive, Gmail, Photos, Calendar, Tasks, Keep, Contacts
@tsuri_by I've enjoyed using the drive, email, and photos equivalent in Proton over the past year or so.
@rspfau Yep sounds good!, I am working on linux so I will probably have to wait till they come up with the Proton Drive client for linux though..

@tsuri_by @rspfau i use #nextcloud for drive, photos, calendar, ... there is also a software for linux. Mail is self hosted.

Nextcloud - Open source content collaboration platform

The most popular open source content collaboration platform for tens of millions of users at thousands of organizations across the globe

Nextcloud
@mosiwo @rspfau Yep considering going there, thanks.

@tsuri_by @rspfau Yes, with some technical know-how, you can host #Nextcloud yourself. However, there are numerous European companies that offer it as a ready-made package. I chose #Hetzner for myself. I get 1TB of cloud storage there for around 5 euros / Data on german server. I think that's great. https://www.hetzner.com/de/storage/storage-share/

There are other providers as well; this isn't meant to be an advertisement. You'll have to compare and find the best one for you. 👍

Managed nextcloud: Günstiger Cloud Speicher

Managed nextcloud bei Hetzner: sicherer, günstiger Cloud Speicher. ✓ DSGVO-konform ✓ simpel und individuell ✓ 100 % grüne Energie

@mosiwo @rspfau Sounds like a great option actually, thanks!

@tsuri_by @rspfau you are welcome. So you could use for example proton free just for email and Nextcloud for storage and everything else.

You can extend Nextcloud with many free apps from the internal Nextcloud app store. There's also a Nextcloud mail client where you can set up your Proton or other email account as IMAP, so you don't even have to switch back and forth between the cloud and mail.

I haven't had a separate email program installed on my computer for years and only use webmail.

@mosiwo @rspfau I did use to run my own nextcloud server a while back, so it will be interesting to give it another try. Using a European server sounds a bit more practical though, especially as there is a difference between setting up your own server and making sure your own server that you set up is reliable, at least as far as syncing goes.
@tsuri_by @rspfau That's correct. They're also certain that the data won't be lost. As I understand it, Hetzner, for example, has at least five continuous backups of each file. These backups are created daily.
