A little more than a year ago I bought one of those inexpensive #GameDad retro-gaming portable devices, an Anbernic RG40XX H. So it seems like enough time has passed that I can report back that it is not very good.

The bundled software is trash. One of the benefits of these Linux-based portables is that you can replace the OS with one of many community-developed ones. I tried several. None of them are particularly good either. The battery life is also abysmal.

If you're interested in this segment, spend a little more and get something better.

ANBERNIC RG40XX H

@jalefkowit I've had significantly better luck at the lower end of the market, the 35xx and the cube, but I'm mostly sticking to 8 and 16-bit systems.

Disappointed to hear that the 40XX delivered a bad time!

@jalefkowit I swear I am not trying to reply-guy you when I ask; did you try MinUI? I have the same model and that OS solved the battery life problem for me because it aggressively saves state and turns itself off. Stock OS and other fancy looking ones die way too fast for my usage pattern of occasional pickup.

@jalefkowit I upgraded my RG40XX H to an RG476H running Gamma OS (Android distro specifically for these machines) and it's quite the upgrade.

Not least, I needed the bigger screen.
