This is a must! 💯

#linux

@itsfoss What the heck does it do? Summon Linus Torvalds like the freaking Batman or something?
@jasohill @itsfoss
I'm sure that it could be programmable. Now, where do I get a bag of these?
@jasohill @itsfoss it's the META key, where the windows key normally is. In a lot of distros, pressing it once launches an application launcher, and a lot of WMs use it + other keys for window management, e.g. on my config CTRL+META+2 moves a window to workspace 2.
@jasohill @itsfoss
Ok to clarify, it's also and more usually called the SUPER key. Meta key is fine too, but in emacs world "meta key" still means ALT
@jasohill @itsfoss gets you rid of the spydows key.
@jasohill That would be optimal...
@itsfoss I need it to be the Arch logo btw
@itsfoss a good replacement to the SLOP logo
@itsfoss How can I re-reprogram the right-Ctl key???
@itsfoss I miss keyboards where there was no button there.
@itsfoss been like this for some months now
@itsfoss nobody ever needed this. It’s a useless William gates memorial key, no matter what you print on it. We’re all not waiting for the next big thing called copilot key.
@Jtuchel @itsfoss the super key was literally the most worn out key on my laptop before I replaced my keyboard lol. Probably the fifth most pressed key after like, escape, space, Ctrl, shift
@komali_2 @itsfoss care to share what you used it for? For me, it's the only one looking brand new.

@Jtuchel @itsfoss Hm I need to get my config back on github, but basically
SUPER+num == switch to that workspace
CTRL+SUPER+num == move window to that workspace
SHIFT+SUPER+j/k/h/l == resize window in given direction
SUPER+j/k/h/l == move window in that direction

I use hyprland, my bindings were similar when I used sway and i3

@Jtuchel @itsfoss I would say super+num is my most common thing. Switch from terminal workspace, to browser, to editor, to rendered view, to email/slack/calendar, back to editor, etc.
@itsfoss I think the key should be done away with altogether. My favourite keyboards don't have them, so I'm probably biased. Although, I did recently get a new keyboard with the dreaded Win key and I discovered that Win+. lets you type in an emoji by name. Kind of shifted my opinion a little bit... it can actually be useful instead of something that I hit by mistake 100% of the time.
@muddle @itsfoss there's tons of other key bindings for the SUPER key, you might be surprised!
@komali_2 @itsfoss probably, but my only memories of it are from accidentally hitting it while I'm trying to play a game in Windows and getting dumped out at the worst possible time.

@muddle @itsfoss ohhh the pain, true.

In the post windows world we can free ourselves to bind it however we want, at least!

@komali_2 @itsfoss freedom of binding and freedom from binding. Just how I like my religion.
@itsfoss the thing I’m going to miss most going from Mac to Linux is the “command” key; having cmd+c as the universal keystroke for “copy” that does not conflict with ctrl+c in the terminal is probably the most common but having all of that deconflicted has been really helpful
@ShadSterling @itsfoss try remapping caps lock to instead be CTRL, it's a life changer. Saved my wrists.
@komali_2 @ShadSterling @itsfoss I usually map caps lock to Compose key. Feels like a superpower.
@skalyan @komali_2 @itsfoss what does that have to do with having separate keys for interrupt (ctrl+c) and copy (cmd+c)?
@ShadSterling @komali_2 @itsfoss It has to do with remapping the Caps Lock key (mentioned in the comment I was immediately responding to).
@skalyan @komali_2 @itsfoss which in turn was a response to my post which it didn’t seem related to 🤷
@ShadSterling @skalyan @itsfoss sorry, I never really understand social media UX, I probably replied to the wrong post
@komali_2 @skalyan @itsfoss ah, ok, when the thread continued I thought maybe it was about a way to use another key like the command key that I wasn’t following
@itsfoss I use Linux with a perixx KU-9938 ergonomical keyboard. Here this key is labelled "Start", which I do find acceptable. Never forget: this key already existed before #microslop under various names (Super/Hyper, Meta, Mode, etc.):

@itsfoss

I upgraded all my keyboards.

#Linux #Tux #sticker

@janvlug i think i recognize that one :)
@joepbc @janvlug
Zo kan het ook
@taaldader @janvlug ik zit in ieder geval forever stuck in Vim hier.

@taaldader oh haha nice, die kende ik nog niet :)

Overigens werkt het rubberen stompje nog wel, maar een beetje crappy is het wel

@janvlug @itsfoss

My previous laptop and my current one didn't need the upgrade 😁

@tuxedocomputers

@janvlug One sticker to keep the slop away! 💪
@itsfoss @janvlug bsd users in the chat: am I a joke to you?

#UnbrandMySuperKey
@itsfoss mine has a windows logo... I like to imagine that everytime i hit the windows button to open the Gnome menu, some executive at microsoft experiences a sharp pain, like i'm stabbing a voodoo doll

@itsfoss

So it's Linux for the WIN

@itsfoss I think a GNU head is better.
