Just got my chronic open-source fever again. When that happens, I go on hours trying to figure out how to replace "evil" services with open-source ones. Last time I deleted Instagram, Threads, X, and Linkedin, and moved here intead. This time trying to figure out whether it's time to ditch Google and move to Proton. I am not sure it's quite there yet for me but getting close. Any thoughts?

@tsuri_by I don't miss a thing not using gmail. From Tuta or Proton both get the job done for me.
@cbdesu That's great to know, I will be there soon as well 🙂
@tsuri_by I think the nice thing about it was that the change is gradual. Since it is a new email address I have also been very selective to who actually has the address. So the mail that I get on one account is of the personal type and I look forward to seeing that something came in. No newsletters, no ads, no change of terms and conditions email.s
@cbdesu That's a good advice thanks I will do the gradual thing too. I have a proton email but I want to upgrade and pay for the entire package. I want to replace google contacts to sync with my phone, and google keep which I heard they acquired Standard Notes.

I agree that switching gradually is a good course of action here. You can’t climb a mountain in a day.

I would like to recommend using the hide my email addresses if you’ll use your proton to sign up for any services. It’s a good way to keep your mailbox clean in case of some data breach.

I have tried using Standard Notes a bit for offline use and I can recommend it. I think it can probably replace keep since it’s just a notes app.

When it comes to replacing Contacts however, I find Proton’s interface to be poorly integrated. It doesn’t have a dedicated app and using it on the mail app opens the web page. It certainly works for storing contacts but don’t expect it to be too well integrated with your phone applications.

@neutronstar @cbdesu Yeah contacts isn't there quite yet. Also, I would probably have to wait for the Proton drive linux client, as otherwise I would have to keep paying both for Google and Proton cloud. Thank you for your response on this.
