figuring out how to hack internet radio into Jellyfin even though I don't ever listen to internet radio

Anyway, anyone got some good stations they'd recommend?

#Jellyfin #FOSS #Radio #InternetRadio

@Rusty like, shoutcast-style urls? πŸ‘€ what kind of music do you like?

@Kodi Yeah β€‹ I finally got off my lazy butt and read the documentation and saw you can plunk shoutcast streams into an M3U file and Jellyfin will read them as live TV tuners, which then a lot of Jellyfin music clients will read back as radio stations. It's extremely hacky.

Uh, hmm. Power/symphonic metal, alt rock, trip hop, synthwave, uhhh. Lossa stuff. My music library is pretty eclectic.

@Rusty OH YAY ok welllll off the top of my head

for general pop/rock/top 40 stuff i like truckers fm, which is a station geared towards good driving music for the American and European Truck Simulator communities. As such it also has a bunch of silly ads for rp trucker companies. no ads otherwise. - https://live.truckers.fm

electrofunk/electroswing/vaporwave/generally funky electronica from smaller artists. one of my personal faves. also has a bunch of fun cute space-themed "ad" bumpers for The Vibes. no real ads - https://funkyway.azuracast.com/listen/funkywayfm/radio.mp3

Literally half the shit on Soma FM. pick a genre, just about any genre. my faves are Lush, Suburbs of Goa and Thistle radio, but they have a lot. also mostly smaller or lesser known artists. you can grab m3u's from the individual station pages - https://somafm.com

@Rusty Also feel compelled to post this one. No real reason, it existing in 2026 just brings me joy.

@Kodi Man, I'm surprised how much of these just popped right up on Shortwave when I searched them β€‹ I love FOSS projects, dang.

I was kinda curious how much I'd actually use internet radio, although getting into American Truck Simulator seems like a really good use-case for it I didn't even consider.

@Rusty The vibe I have gotten is that a lot of people who are really into electronics and opensource software seem to like internet radio? So I guess I shouldn't be surprised lol Tho tbf I have formed this impression at least because of Soma's hosting a station dedicated to Defcon.

I love it because it carries a chunk of that 'wild west', unregulated era the internet used to exist in, or at least feels like it. It's comforting in a weird way to know what I'm listening to has been largely curated by, like, actual people with tastes and the like

@Rusty @Kodi whaaaaaaaaaat? πŸ‘οΈπŸ‘„πŸ‘οΈ

How does this work in #Jellyfin clients? I think we have a #Jellify feature request for this - and I know that I would personally use it

@violexene @Kodi I followed the official process for adding it in the Jellyfin documentation and it shows up under Live TV > Channels in the Jellyfin web interface and shows up in Nocturne under Radios. It doesn't pull the currently playing song though since Jellyfin doesn't support icy/shoutcast metadata.
Internet Radio | Jellyfin

It is possible to add Internet radio stations (e.g. shoutcast) to Jellyfin by utilizing the Live TV M3U Tuner device type. Directly entering links into the M3U tuner is supported, but it depends on the provider.

@Rusty I often listen to SLAYRadio, which has bouncy C64 remixes and such when I want to do some energetic coding: https://www.slayradio.org/
