That boost I just bumped of the water droplets on a leaf reminds me of a technical word pair people often get wrong.

The words describe materials or surfaces that either repel water or absorb moisture and they are respectively hydrophobic and hygroscopic. The mistake you see a lot is "hydroscopic" which isn't a proper technical term.

The difference is that the latter refers to absorbing moisture, not water, and uses a Greek root to say that.

I guess there's also "hydrophilic" which can be used if you really want to use a "hydro" word, but it's a broader word that can refer to more than just absorption.

That makes me think about absorption vs adsorption and I don't remember the differences between those words without a duck search. Maybe someone else does.

How did I get on this thread? Oh yeah I saw a picture of raindrops on a leaf.

Checked - think butter on toast is "absorbed" while peanut butter is mostly "adsorbed."
(One combines, the other adheres on top of it) 😊

Drop it on the floor and it's always peanut butter side down.

@ottaross

Is adsorption the amount of ads you can watch before giving up on the video you want to see?

(Kidding, don't hit me!)
