" #Microlaser detects individual molecule...." Everyone in #photonics is probably doing this now but it seems such a simple yet clever idea. #RabbitHole of the afternoon - and well enough explained for a non-specialist to follow.

"The resonators we used in this study were microspheres with diameters ranging from 70 to 110 μm, ⭐fabricated by⭐melting ⭐the tips of⭐optical⭐fibres⭐ ... dip coated with two thin layers of Yb3+-doped sol .... The resonators exhibited Q factors of 105−106 at the excitation wavelength band.

A 972-nm laser used to excite the gain medium via a tapered fibre (TF) coupled to the microlaser (Fig. 1)⬇️ , with emission typically observed between 1,030 nm and 1,100 nm. All the experiments were conducted in aqueous environments, and ytterbium was selected as it particularly provides high gain efficiency when the resonator is operated when immersed in water and emitting at a wavelength with excellent water transmission. Due to its high gain efficiency in water, sub-milliwatt excitation and lasing are enabled...."

Okay, I know I'm dumb so I'll spare you the agony by relating my entirely wasted afternoon.

It started with a simple student survey in my introduction to #PublicHealth class. We gave the students five potential topics for a debate day event. Vaccines, MCH stuff and the last one "is public health intrinsically global". That idea wasn't fleshed out in our minds and I thought it wouldn't get many votes because it wasn't very specific. It won (of course).

Now I get to make this learning module work. Sigh. We'll need readings and I'm good at the "of course public health is intrinsically global!" side of things so WHO it is and the Pandemic Agreement where;

"Article 12 establishes the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) System, which governs the rapid sharing of pathogens with pandemic potential and their genetic sequence data, while ensuring the equitable distribution of resulting benefits and medical countermeasures."

But the US withdrew from WHO and also ended USAID which is being replaced with an #AmericaFirstGlobalHealthStrategy;
https://www.state.gov/america-first-global-health-strategy

Which involves negotiating bilateral agreements that are specific for how US money is spent in each county, as an example I read the agreement with #Rwanda;

"United States-Rwanda Bilateral Health Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding"

https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/2025/12/continuing-to-deliver-on-the-america-first-global-health-strategy-with-the-signing-of-the-united-states-rwanda-bilateral-health-cooperation-memorandum-of-understanding/

Which includes language that's pretty durn specific language.

I just got fed up with a tool and quick wrote and published a replacement tool. Enjoy!

This lets me install .deb files off the internet without typing any extra commands.

It is timely because microsoft, canonical, google, etc. are all going the other direction...

Android in particular is trying to lock down to prevent scammers, but at the expense of "power users..."

There is an element of power-grab in this dynamic.
