If you are wondering what the “Tech Prosperity Corps” might be, it is apparently a new Peace Corps program to send people into developing countries and tell them to use AI

https://www.peacecorps.gov/about-the-agency/media-center/news/peace-corps-launches-tech-prosperity-corps-initiative/

"Have you even CONSIDERED the productivity benefits of applying frontier models to agentic workflows," the Peace Corps guy says to a local who just keeps repeating "clean water"
@jalefkowit This is uncanny. A guy where I work was doing a presentation where he gushed about how a woman in a village in a developing county could diagnose the cause of her child’s fever and diarrhea using AI: I said it sounded like they could use clean drinking water much more than AI. Really took the wind out of the presenter’s sails but he needed a reality check.
@MisuseCase @jalefkowit How much clean water will the datacenter use to tell the villager they need clean water.

@MisuseCase

In ancient times, people would go to Delphi to hear declarations from the oracle, a priestess said to sit on a chair over a crack in the ground, breathing in intoxicating fumes, and uttering her enigmatic prophecies.

Now, with AI, nobody looking for answers has to make an arduous journey or sacrifice some poor little goat.

Prophecy is democratized.

Each can have their own #AI supply of mystery fumes, to happily huff on, get totally wasted on, and then proclaim dubious nonsense.

@jalefkowit ask ChatGPT how to build a well, duh.
@jalefkowit So the AI prosperity gospel?

@jalefkowit aaaaaaa too many layers of bullshit (head explodes)

@jalefkowit

DEAR LORD. WHY? 🤮

@FediThing Crook magnetism. Trump loves AI and the AI bros love Trump
@jalefkowit
Let 'developing countries' develop themselves. Enough of outside interference messing up
@jalefkowit so the Peace Corps -- the brainchild of a labor union leader, and founded by a US president whose stated goal was to counter stereotypes of "Yankee imperialism" -- has now been perverted into an emissary for digital colonialism, global surveillance, strikebreaking, laborforce deskilling, and oligarchic dominance. Awesome. Yet another JFK legacy being shat on by this administration.

@jalefkowit Wow. This makes all the other projects we've run in developing countries which aggressively missed the whole point seem quaint and, in comparison, not abysmal failures.

"To save time asking people what they needed, we asked AI duplicates of them instead and they said they really needed more AI!"

@jalefkowit @davidgerard excellent premise for the next terminator sequel, less excellent public policy goal

@jalefkowit @mejs

My first thought is that excellent piece the Swedish newspapers worked on wrt Meta glasses and folks in Nairobi being the real AI. So perhaps folks there are already aware of how to use AI.

Meta’s glasses are recording private moments – reviewed by workers in Kenya

Meta's smart glasses send private video footage to low-paid data workers in Nairobi — without the subjects ever knowing.

@jalefkowit So missionaries for the Technocracy now? I feel like I have some dystopian books on my shelves with this plot.
@jalefkowit blegh, maybe Peace Corps has always done this and I'm just ignorant but this institution engaging so explicitly in a corporate interest feels very gross
@jalefkowit
Does #ai work when there is an unstable and unreliable internet connection? Asking for a friend in Africa.
@jalefkowit
Follow-up question, does #ai work on a Nokia phone using SMS text messages?
