Oh, they didn't. They fear death as much as in the old days. It's just nobody treats religion that serious anymore, not even the ultra-religious nutbags. I think religion is more like a tool today for control and pushing some sort of far-right agenda. But the fear is still there, now it's all about "research" about prolonging life or overcome the failing body.
Religion has been a tool for control since it was invented. That's its purpose. But my comment was more specifically about the building in this photo. This is Wells Court and it was commissioned by a rich newspaper owner and designed to be social housing for local workers who had lost their jobs when the mills closed down.
