@glassbottommeg Worked at Perforce for several years. They were pretty good, as employers, but man. Awful lot of laurels they had to rest upon.

I am glad to see they have actual real competition now.

@cmdrmoto @glassbottommeg One thing that stands out to me - I always considered Git as that contender for Perforce, with one major advantage that Git has that infamous public hosting site that is GitHub.

Yet to watch the video, but I wonder if Ark could challenge both? I would actually be totally up for that, personally, as I preferred Perforce to Git.

@cmdrmoto @glassbottommeg Having watched the video, it sounds like the core difference is that with no license bought, Ark defaults to 3 seats? I'm taking that to mean you have to pay for more seats, but unsure if that's just the administration side of things and you can manually add seats, just that you don't get public "Anyone can contribute" seats.

@AT1ST @cmdrmoto this isn't meant for open source like that, the seats are how many people can connect to a given server. It's for selling licenses to a studio based on how many employees they have.

@glassbottommeg @cmdrmoto Ah, that's good to know.

A *little* disappointing in that it does talk of importing a Git Repo, so it felt like it could be a Git replaced, especially with everything GitHub is doing.

A "Hey, we won't try to train a LLM off of your codebase, and we won't tank our own uptime" competitor with a new VCS seems like it could be a potential shoe-in for replacing Git in this particular time.

@glassbottommeg I always found perforce horribly clunky so if this has learned from git while bringing the advantages of game-friendliness then great. I do worry about the proprietaryness though, we all know what happened to Plastic

@glassbottommeg If I were them I'd actually say who I was as well. I can find no trace of who makes this, not even a company name, never mind a real person, which is bit of a red flag for me for a closed source product.

@sinbad @glassbottommeg I started taking a look at Ark, but stopped when I found out that it's implemented in Jonathan Blow's Jai language. I'm not quite ready to trust version control written in a language that's still an invite-only beta.

It did seem interesting though.

@glassbottommeg @kojack Having burned my Twitter to the ground a while back I can’t even view his profile, is it not good? Still being on that place isn’t a great start

@sinbad @kojack It's actually quite good. He's vocally anti/mocking AI, vocally coming out against Isreal doing a genocide (and the US's involvement in Iran), etc

Also he's Portuguese I believe

@sinbad @kojack He even holds the right opinion about unit tests: that they're best served for low level internals like math libraries, and get increasingly less useful the further the code is from that due to how flimsy the mocking tends to be.

@sinbad @kojack Basically, didn't have the red flags I was cringing to find. Thus far I didn't see any red flags. Not gonna dig into the dude's history or anything, but passes sniff test at least.

@glassbottommeg @kojack That’s good to hear at least. But switching VCS is a huge deal and requires earning a lot of trust, they should probably open up a little more. Maybe it’s not wanting to admit it’s just one person or something because they want to be taken seriously, but that’s something you should just own up front. It’s worse to have people discover that later and wonder what else you might be obfuscating

@glassbottommeg @sinbad @kojack He was not at all shy about that a few months ago - quite happy to say "hey it's just me" - I had a good chat with him, seemed smart & sane. I wonder if someone gave him the advice to "look bigger" to increase trust? Ah, advice...
